Not my favorite day but they are all good in some ways.  Didn’t get to paint this morning and now the light is not right and I have been having a very hard time with a huge blood blister on the under side of my tongue that started on  Saturday. It popped the next day but has been so sore I have had a hard time talking and eating.  I finally gave in today and took some advil.

I don’t like to take medication of any kind but if I have a hard time eating, then I am very unhappy.  I eat something every few hours.  I have first and second breakfast just like a hobbit so strong pain when eating had to go!

Anyway I am having a great time with another wildflower painting and looking forward to working on it tomorrow.  It took a bad turn yesterday but now it is back on track. I’ll bet that makes a lot of sense.  To think there are some people that don’t think artists are crazy.  LOL!

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Clyde made a very interesting purchase that reminded me of a joke I saw on Facebook.

A woman was telling her husband he was not going out with a polka dot face mask and a plaid shirt.

Well Clyde bought the cover of his book I illustrated on a face mask.  Now what will that go with?

I am really getting into wildflowers right now and looking forward to tomorrow when I can get to the second stage of my latest one!  The one in the video is of wildflowers in beautiful Wildwood Park, Radford, Va.

My latest one is not a specific place, it is based on wildflower fields I have seen with my own improvisation.  I truly understand what Edward Hopper said one time, “I am best when I improvise.”  Artists build up so many images in their minds and it is great when they come out on canvas.

Sometimes I like to stick closely to what I see and other times I like to elaborate on what I see and sometimes there are no recognizable shapes – music without words.

Anyway, lots of computer work to do so I better get busy.  Again, I have included a link to  a painting on face masks!

Cheers and please view my video and the doctor’s video if you haven’t seen them yet.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Clyde is on our church council and they are having Zoom meetings online about possibly having services again.  People will be required to wear masks and maintain a safe distance.

It is a small congregation so that should not be a problem. Clyde told me about their thoughts on the matter after the meeting was over.

Well, I guess we can’t have coffee and snacks after the service.

Uh oh. That’s the end of the church.

Ha ha.  I think we can manage a service without coffee afterwards.

You never know.  LOL!

Wow!  I am always complaining about lack of time but when there is a family emergency the time really gets shot out of a cannon! This can’t be Thursday!  What happened to that awful Monday that got worse on Tuesday and horrible on Wednesday.

My husband’s food poisoning turned into  a much more severe problem that we had to go to the emergency room about.  They were about to keep him overnight when they managed to get his heart rate down so I brought him home to a lot of medical fun.  As Snoopy once said in the great comic strip, “My mind reels with sarcastic replies.

Anyway, he is better but has to pretty much stay in bed for a while which is the next thing to torture for a naturalist.

Oh well, he is on the mend and that is great!

That was CLOSE!

We had to travel I-81 today with trucks everywhere!  What a congested road!  We took turns driving and we both kept a close watch on all the traffic.   We were getting pretty close to home when we were traveling in the left lane with a huge truck in the right lane.  There was so much traffic my husband couldn’t get around it.

I was getting a little uptight when the truck started to slide into our lane!  I yelled at my husband to hit the horn when the driver must have awakened  and moved back into the right lane.

I can’t say for sure that he had fallen asleep but that was the closest we have ever come to being creamed by a truck!  Yikes!

Beautiful view of Radford Virginia’s popular park!

Today I came across a very interesting ghost story written by “an old man” according to the writer.  It is intriguing to me that the author has a theory that perhaps we see these things when we are young and more perceptive to what is around us. He has not had a supernatural experience since this story.

As I have mentioned before, I am a skeptical person but I have had four strange events in my life that I cannot explain.  Interestingly enough, the latest one was a few months ago and I am not young by most people’s estimation of what young is.

Lunch Bucket Man

The writer’s story happened when he was a student.  He was traveling home to Roanoke via Rt. 81 via Wildwood Road.  Supposedly the Wildwood Inn has quite a spooky reputation. The Inn was closed and he was pretty much the only car on the road.

As he approached the ramp to Wildwood Road he saw a tall thin man holding a lunch bucket, not a pail, but a bucket.  The writer said he had seen that type of bucket carried by coal miners.  When the car lights passed over the man there was no shadow.  He didn’t move or change expression.

He seemed to vanish and the writer tried hard to figure out what had happened but could not come up with a logical explanation.  He has not had a similar experience.  This was in the early 1980’s.

I found this story on Ghost of America online.

The Mount Rogers 40th Naturalist Rally is tomorrow!  I wanted to be sure to alert everyone again to this great event!

The 40th Annual Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally

This BRDC signature event highlights the crown jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia.  The Mount Rogers area, which includes Virginia’s three tallest peaks, has long fascinated scholars and explorers.  Not only is there a wide variation in altitude, there are many different ecosystems and mini-ecosystems within a short drive or hike of each other.

The 2014 Rally will be May 9 & 10.

Friday Night Speaker –  Nancy Lee Adamson PhD, Pollinator Conservation Specialist – East Region, The Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation. An Introduction to Native Bees and Other “Beneficial” Arthropods of the Mid-Atlantic – learn about common native bees we can support by protecting and planting pollinator habitat. The program will highlight nesting habits of some of the 500 species of native bees in Virginia, as well as other pollinators, predators, and parasitoids that benefit from pollinator habitat.

Friday night entertainment – Ronald and Ellie Kirby will be bringing in the evening with some traditional old time tunes.

DOOR PRIZE! – David Richert has offered a free afternoon consultation on forest management as the friday night door prize.

Radford City Ghost Story

I had no idea there were so many ghost stories in Southwest Virginia!  Here is another one!

A Former employee of Macados on main street in Radford wrote about a ghost story in 2005.  The restaurant is modern and beautifully decorated on the outside but there is an old basement section with two pantries.  In one section there is a window with glass that is not visible from the outside.  The restaurant was once  The Radford Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Supposedly there is a woman dressed in grey in the downstairs section and employees are told not to talk about her.  Articles fly off the shelf at times and one cook says he did actually see her.  They were face to face and then she faded away!

I got this ghost story from ghostvillage.com

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

My husband is really tearing up the publishing turf these days!  He just published two poems in the online magazine Rose Red!  This is the third issue of this publication that he has had work in!  Yea Word Man!

It is an interesting coincidence that one of the poems he published is about ghosts since I have been having a great time researching local ghost stories!

A Mount Juliet Ghost
Clyde Kessler

An old lady drowned in Nashville.
She was almost ghost of the year, blind.
Somebody heard a twanging in the oaks
and said she’s home by the soul’s voice
dreaming a tree that walks through stars.

None of a moonrise’s gold could fetch
her mind in a séance. A photographer
leased her apartment above a salon,
threw his best camera at a cop car,
it struck and killed a deputy by no luck.

You see vengeance spelled with a flood
is still the soul prying itself from hate.
You can build a new house in Mount Juliet.
You can throw parties that marry you off
imprisoned. The old lady walks you home.
