We had a great time at The Peaks of Otter!  The last time we were there we took the bus up to Sharp Top and walked down.  I don’t remember the quarter mile trek mostly up stone stairs to get to the top after the bus drops you off!  That was not easy for me in spite of all the exercise I get and the yoga I do every day.  My pulse was racing.

My mountain man husband and son zipped on up without any problem.  Oh well, it was great and the lunch at the lodge was perfect.  I think they must make their own bread.  The bun for my chicken sandwich was fantastic!

Still super happy with my new mouse!  Once in a while the pointer is in the shade and I think the signal is lost!  Oh no!  I can’t bear to have Zippy the Wonder Mouse acting like the old rat.  So far, I am always wrong and Zippy is connected and clicking away!  Oh yes!

 

Clyde is at his usual word play and he doesn’t know if anyone else has come up with this one but I am going to print it anyway in anticipation of Halloween.

• I will never forget the time my husband, son, and I walked down from Sharp Top mountain on The Peaks of Otter in Bedford County, Virginia.   How great to see the world from the mountain’s view!  We walked around and around the pointed peak and saw people climbing up.  I would never do that.  I am not in that good of shape to walk up a mountain and I think my son would have complained big time about that type of walk even though he did spend his childhood walking with his Dad on long mountain trails and even encountered a bear one time at Rocky Knob!

• I am especially proud of my painting, “View from Sharp Top”, that was based on a photograph I took on the way down.  This painting has an exceptionally complicated textural surface and the colors sing!   Now that the Lodge has re-opened I hope we will find the time to visit this gorgeous resort again soon!  Such a peaceful, beautiful section of The Blue Ridge Parkway!

One of my favorite 20th century artists Pierre Bonnard once said, in so many words that an artist can learn a lot from the colors of a peach since they don’t change like the colors in a sunset.

My naturalist husband is at it again!  This week-end he will be leading a Spring Discovery Walk  with Nancy Kent at Wildwood Park in Radford, Virginia.  Nancy Kent is a great photographer and retired elementary school teacher.

The two of them are teaming up to help parents and their children learn how to  photograph various insects and flowers!  What a great way to start off the Spring season and enjoy nature in a beautiful setting!  Come with your children for a wonderful and educational outing!

 

 

 

The Peaks of Otter on The Blue Ridge Parkway

Peaks of Otter History

My family has enjoyed this beautiful Bedford setting and it is one of many Blue Ridge Parkway sites my husband researches for birds and butterflies. I thought is would be interesting to include some historical facts about this beautiful place that has been an inspiration for a number of my paintings.

No one really knows how the Peaks got their name. There are no otters in the area. The most likely explanation is that two brothers, Charles and Robert Ewing named the peaks after otters from their native land.

There are many natural settings and rivers named for otters in Scotland and England. Charles Ewing and family members are buried at the foot of Sharp Top.

Europeans have known The Peaks for about two and a half centuries. Flat Top is the higher of the two and is 4,001 feed above sea level. Sharp Top is 3,875. Sharp Top appears higher but it is an optical illusion.

Sharp Top draws more visitors and Virginia’s contribution to The Washington Monument was taken from the top of Sharp Top.

Life with Bird and Word Man

Since I am attempting to blog every week day I doubt that I will come up with an example of my husband’s crazy humor everyday but I do want to include something about him in my blog. He has devoted his life to the protection of his beautiful mountain home and has kept extensive wildlife records since his youth.

His discovery of the endangered Mitchel Satyr in 1998 is considered to be one of the most important wildlife finds in the second half of the twentieth century in Virginia.

My Art Work

Although the bulk of my artwork is about the Blue Ridge Mountains and the New River Valley, I am quite versatile and have been exploring my expressive side for some time now. I am having a great time working with my unique brand of Expressionism which I call Kendall Expressions. I am letting my colors and textures fly in these paintings and am excited about putting up my latest one of a domestic cat.
