At the doctor’s office yesterday I could not help but hear a conversation between two workers at the desk.

One was trim and the other one was morbidly obese. The obese one asked the trim one if she had lost weight.

The trim one said others had asked her that but she didn’t think so. She said her weight stays around 140-145.

The other one said her right foot weighed 145.

They both laughed and the obese one gave the trim one a hug.

Sense of humor is so important!

Maybe I am just old fashioned but I think members of Congress should not heckle a president when he is giving a State of the Union speech.

I remember when the opposite party would just look glum and sometimes clap. I think that is enough of a response. I was also sad to hear that there was heckling by the president’s party, too.

I am glad I did not watch it, especially when known liars call the president a liar.

Here we are with a plaque that just won’t quit. I know so many people that have gotten Covid. My mother-in-law died from it.

There are a lot of people in this country AND in Congress that do not want Separation of Church and State. They want people to believe what they believe or else. What does that remind you of?

I wish we would all consider History to be our most important subject and then maybe we would not repeat the errors over and over again.

Time for some positive thoughts on a Saturday. It is a beautiful day here.

I always like to watch my son bowl on his team. He practically smashes those pins. Such energy! I have to get a ball that is very heavy for me or I make a lot of gutter balls.

With a ten pound ball I tend to send it to the left or right. I can keep a twelve pound ball in the lane but it is a strain on my arms. I have never had a lot of strength in my arms.

When I started practicing Yoga I couldn’t hold Downward Facing Dog for more than a few seconds. Now I can hang there for a long time so my arms are definitely better but still pretty weak.

Oh well, I really can’t complain. Old but in pretty good shape. Yoga is at 10:00 today.

We are still down a car.  I hope it won’t cost too much to fix it.  I just got back from driving Clyde to work. The Prius has been a great car but it is getting to the do we fix it or buy a new one stage.   I think it is time to start looking for a new one.  Yuck!  Hate shopping.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Poor Clyde is still having  a lot of hip pain.  He is considering a trip to the doctor to make sure he didn’t injure himself in some way.  My muscle spasm is completely gone today.  Yesterday Clyde wanted to get out and walk since it was somewhat better.  I was still a little sore.

My grandfather’s saying about small towns came to mind as we started walking the trail.  Go slow, see the town.  Go fast, see the judge.  Well, yesterday the saying was walk slow, see the park, walk fast, hurt the butt.  We were not moving very fast.

Lately Clyde has been saying some pretty wacky things which is typical.  As usual, they are funny, at least to me.  I love word play and he is great at it.  I don’t know about other writers, but this one is fun to live with.  He keeps me laughing.

Anyway, the wild things he has been saying prompted me to say he had better watch out or he will land in a Loony Bin. 

His response was he was already there and they threw him out.  Hopeless case.

The Great Smoky Mountains near The Blue Ridge Parkway and The Mindy Project Tonight!

Another great range mountain range in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains is The Great Smoky mountains.  This is another region my husband, Clyde Kessler, researches for birds and butterflies.  The national park is an extremely popular park.

It was established in 1934 and is the largest national park East of the Rocky Mountains and receives 9-10 million visitors a year.  The park is home to 4000 plant species, 140 tree species and around 1600 black bears.

It is known as the salamander capital of the world with 30 species.

Life with the Bird and Word Man – Clyde Kessler

Shadow on a Ridge Near Rocky Knob is another favorite painting from the Rock Castle Gorge section of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I have more paintings from this area of the Blue Ridge Parkway than any other location.  This is where my husband does most of his bird and butterfly research.

He is a well-known naturalist in The New River Valley and has led countless nature hikes in his beautiful home region.

Another gorgeous mountain vista off The Blue Ridge Parkway is Buffalo mountain.  The name comes from the strong hump on the ridge.  Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church was built by the Reverent Robert Childress who was the subject for the book “The Man Who Moved a Mountain”  This is a great book that I highly recommend!

Buffalo Mountain in Fall is one of my favorite Blue Ridge Mountain landscapes.  The colors of light and shade in fall are especially beautiful.  The violet is  intense and it is difficult to paint the atmospheric effect and not lose the cool colors in the warm colors.  They look as if they are floating together in space.

When Pigs Fly by my Window

I am a workaholic.  It is extremely important to me to sell my work.  I can’t take them with me and I hope they will all have homes when I am gone.  I depend on friends to get me out once in a while, but mostly I am either painting or working at promotion strategies.

Saturday I told my self I ought to try to take a break and rest.  Right as that thought was going through my head a pig flew by my window and winked!   Of course, I didn’t take it easy but I did get a lot of work done!

I have always been drawn to evening scenes.  I doubt you will find many people that don’t like sunsets or sunrises.  I am no exception but I especially like the look of the sky after the sun has gone down and the pink hues tend to predominate the sky.

I will never forget one patron that was very happy with the painting she bought of Mountain Lake in Giles County but decided against one of my New River scenes because there was pink in the sky.  She said she had always seen the orange and purple in the sky but not pink.

She died a number of years ago and whenever I see pink in the sky I think of her.

Life with The Word and Bird Man

My husband, Clyde,  has no problem with cold weather.  He will get up in the middle of the night to check out owl populations for the Audubon Christmas bird counts no matter how cold it is.

After the storm yesterday we were joking around about how he was considering getting out the dog sled to get to the store because I was seriously low on chocolate.

Well, he didn’t get out the sled but he did walk to a nearby store to get a nice lunch and, of course, some chocolate for me!  He really is a nice guy!

I have quite a number of paintings that are based on scenes from Rock Castle Gorge and views from Rocky Knob.  I am pleased with all of them but if I had to pick favorites it would be the ones that include wildflowers.  The wildflowers are especially beautiful there and make for great color accents in my work.

Summer Path at Rock Castle Gorge is one of my favorite landscapes.  My husband took me around to all the paths that were not hiking paths and I especially liked this one because of the colors and the path was grass rather than dirt.  It was probably just a place where a lot of people have walked through to the ridge to see more of the beautiful mountain vista.

My favorite wildflower found there and here in Radford, Virginia is Sweet Pea.  I love all colors but I am especially fond of magenta, probably because it is a red purple so it is both a warm and a cool color.

There is also Red Trillium, white Albultescens, and pink Claytonia virginica in this wonderful Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia.

My husband, Clyde Kessler,  has always kept a close watch on the weather.  He follows all the reports and says some weather forecasters are more accurate than others.  This morning he was quite concerned about the coming  ice and snow storm so he asked me if we needed to get to the store for anything before the roads got bad.

I told him we were seriously low on chocolate.

He said we better send out the dog sled. LOL!
