Not much to say except we are very excited about the house we may be moving into this summer! Artist and writers need a lot of space that we don’t have right now. The house we are looking at will be perfect for us! Now we need to get busy and fix up the one we have.
Not looking forward to that but it has to be done. I think my painting time is going to shrink even more than now. Ouch! Oh well, I think I can get going with my latest one tomorrow. First stage is done and now to get to the second, hopefully without cussing. I never know.
Anyway, please check out my latest youtube above. This time I was planning on an abstract but when it was done I thought some birds would make for great accents. I like the way it turned out!
As you can see by my selections from my portfolio, I am really missing the shore so much!

I started a new lake painting today and it was quite a different experience. I don’t know if this pandemic has me down or I just wanted to try a different approach to the first layer, but it really is wild. I am hoping to get a more complicated system in color with this one from the start and it really is colorful right now.
It was not fun. As I have mentioned before a lot of artists talk about the first layer as fun and then it gets difficult. My first layer usually is fun, so this is definitely a different type of session for me.
I will see what happens next! Painting keeps me going.
Be sure to check out my latest video above! I now have over 900 followers! Lots of great comments.

I am very pleased with my latest painting of Claytor Lake and I am considering painting more of this great park. This is only the second painting I have done of one my favorite places in Southwest Virginia. This one is so close to exactly what I was after which is a nice experience, but I do have plans for a slightly different approach to my next one. Always learning, always improving.
As I have said over and over again it would be boring if I had a set way of painting that never changed. My opinion. I do think there are artists that do not change their methods and there is nothing wrong with that.
I have to keep on progressing even though I’ll bet a lot of people don’t see that much difference, but I do, and it is an exciting process!

Where in the world did Friday go? Way too much to do today to get to this blog but I like to put out two a week so here goes.
I am too tired to gab and I still have a lot of work to do so I am going to leave up the artwork from the last blog except for the first one which I am replacing with a print sale of Dominion to a great Pennsylvania patron!
I miss that rink very much. When my son was young I took him and his friends there once or twice a week and I love to skate. One time my son won the limbo contest!
Another rink opened years later in Christiansburg and it closed due to legal problems. I wish another one would open up. Anyway, have a great weekend!

I am at the final stage on my Claytor Lake painting and it is going well. Usually, I am afraid my final changes will hurt what I have but this time I seem to know just what to do to get to that end. That is a nice experience!
I am going to paint more of Claytor Lake which is one of my favorite places in Southwest Virginia. Lots of wonderful memories and I know that positive feeling will be expressed in paint. I can’t explain how that happens, but it does!
I think I am going to have to paint another large one. The small scale is nice sometimes, but when it turns out well I am always sad it is not on a large canvas.
Oh well. Always an adventure! Check out this week’s youtube of another Pittsburgh skyline painting!

I am having one of those experiences that many artists talk about regarding the painting process. I was having a very hard time with my latest Claytor Lake painting and then a somewhat different approach took off! I will never forget what my first teacher told me long ago. When it is difficult, that usually means you are about to learn something and hit a different level.
That is what happened, but it probably won’t be that noticeable to viewers, but you never know. I know I am happy with more complication in the surface due to a different brush stroke approach. I look forward to finishing this one and using this technique on another one!
I really do live to paint but I may have to cut down on some social media. It is so time consuming. I am going to have to go over the demands on my time and reassess how I can get everything done and still have a life.
I’m sure there are many people that have to do that in this computer era!.

Well, that was a different experience at the dentist. The hygienist worked for a fairly long time cleaning my teeth and then she flossed them and polished them. Of course, I thought we were done.
Not so! She got out the pick axe again and spent a long time plowing through my teeth and gums. Yikes! I will remember that so I won’t be unpleasantly surprised at my next cleaning.
Anyway, progress is being made on my latest oil painting and I received the most views ever in a 24 hour period on a youtube that I put up yesterday! Lots of great comments!
Please check it out above.

So glad to be back to work on an oil painting of one of my favorite places in Southwest Virginia, Claytor lake! I am looking forward to the warm weather when I can swim there again. It was hard to stay away this summer but I didn’t want to risk Covid exposure.
I have lots of fond memories of swimming there with family and friends. I also want to go to the Peaks of Otter and Wintergreen on The Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of great mountain resorts that we like to go to. We don’t ski so we like to go to Wintergreen for the hiking and swimming and great food!
After 2020 we need a great break!

I am always so much happier when I am in the middle of a new work! Have to paint! It is a beautiful day here and I hope I can get out and walk. It is always nice to do more than the bank, grocery store or post office trips.
We are all so limited right now so it is great to show my work and talk about it in my Youtubes. It is sort of like teaching at Radford University again. I did a lot of demonstrating in all of my classes and it was a nice experience. I think those demos were helpful. The ones I do on Youtube are not for instruction. I am just painting and talking about the decisions I make.
Still, it does remind me of my teaching experience. Be sure to check out my new one above! It is getting a lot of hits and comments!

So many crazy things happening in our country right now that I am worried about what may happen next. What took place on the capital was horrible and inexcusable. I was horrified and hope there is no more violent protesting. I can’t understand people that think violence is the way to accomplish anything. I am so glad our congress members were not injured.
My father had so much respect for life that I will always remember him getting bugs out of a pool so they wouldn’t drown. I hope in 2021 we will respect each other and work together for a better America.
On a more cheerful note, I am pleased to sell another print of Marsh View at Pawleys Island to a great North Carolina patron! The selection of mat and frame to offset the print is beautiful! Be sure to click on the link to see all the print possibilities!
