I am having one of those experiences that many artists talk about regarding the painting process. I was having a very hard time with my latest Claytor Lake painting and then a somewhat different approach took off! I will never forget what my first teacher told me long ago. When it is difficult, that usually means you are about to learn something and hit a different level.
That is what happened, but it probably won’t be that noticeable to viewers, but you never know. I know I am happy with more complication in the surface due to a different brush stroke approach. I look forward to finishing this one and using this technique on another one!
I really do live to paint but I may have to cut down on some social media. It is so time consuming. I am going to have to go over the demands on my time and reassess how I can get everything done and still have a life.
I’m sure there are many people that have to do that in this computer era!.

Well, that was a different experience at the dentist. The hygienist worked for a fairly long time cleaning my teeth and then she flossed them and polished them. Of course, I thought we were done.
Not so! She got out the pick axe again and spent a long time plowing through my teeth and gums. Yikes! I will remember that so I won’t be unpleasantly surprised at my next cleaning.
Anyway, progress is being made on my latest oil painting and I received the most views ever in a 24 hour period on a youtube that I put up yesterday! Lots of great comments!

So glad to be back to work on an oil painting of one of my favorite places in Southwest Virginia, Claytor lake! I am looking forward to the warm weather when I can swim there again. It was hard to stay away this summer but I didn’t want to risk Covid exposure.
I have lots of fond memories of swimming there with family and friends. I also want to go to the Peaks of Otter and Wintergreen on The Blue Ridge Parkway. Lots of great mountain resorts that we like to go to. We don’t ski so we like to go to Wintergreen for the hiking and swimming and great food!
After 2020 we need a great break!

I am always so much happier when I am in the middle of a new work! Have to paint! It is a beautiful day here and I hope I can get out and walk. It is always nice to do more than the bank, grocery store or post office trips.
We are all so limited right now so it is great to show my work and talk about it in my Youtubes. It is sort of like teaching at Radford University again. I did a lot of demonstrating in all of my classes and it was a nice experience. I think those demos were helpful. The ones I do on Youtube are not for instruction. I am just painting and talking about the decisions I make.
Still, it does remind me of my teaching experience. Be sure to check out my new one above! It is getting a lot of hits and comments!

So many crazy things happening in our country right now that I am worried about what may happen next. What took place on the capital was horrible and inexcusable. I was horrified and hope there is no more violent protesting. I can’t understand people that think violence is the way to accomplish anything. I am so glad our congress members were not injured.
My father had so much respect for life that I will always remember him getting bugs out of a pool so they wouldn’t drown. I hope in 2021 we will respect each other and work together for a better America.
On a more cheerful note, I am pleased to sell another print of Marsh View at Pawleys Island to a great North Carolina patron! The selection of mat and frame to offset the print is beautiful! Be sure to click on the link to see all the print possibilities!

I have been trying for days to get to a new painting started but I have had a lot of other things to do and my youtube videos always take up a lot of time. It take a while to decide what I will do next and then I have to prep and then make the video.
Lots of work but I have to get back to my main work which I will do soon.
Anyway, I am pleased to sell another print of Sunflower Burst to a great Kansas patron! This vibrant work certainly is popular so be sure to use the link to get a better look and to see all the print possibilities!

Well, today I have something from the Word Man that made me groan. Funny, but so weird that I did groan. I have congestion almost all of the time. I don’t know if it is allergies or some other problem. When this pandemic is over I am going to see a specialist to see if I have a polyp or something. It is always on the right side.
Anyway, I said to Clyde my nose is always running.
Do you go after it?
GROAN and then a laugh. He never quits!

I finished my latest Blue Ridge sunset painting and I like how it turned out. It is an impasto painting but the surface is not as complicated as many of my paintings are. I wanted a simpler approach that accented silhouettes of the mountains and not tree details of the range that is up close.
It is a dark scene and the darkest colors are not black which is what I wanted. I wanted them to resonant with strong cool and warm colors.
Check it out below! I am glad to begin 2021 with a Blue Ridge painting! Happy New Year!

Nothing from the Word Man this time but we both got a kick out of another Facebook joke.
Since 2020 was such a difficult year there is a cartoon with people down a hall using a broom to carefully open the 2021 door. They all look nervous. I can understand that but
I am hopeful 2021 will be much better!
The US certainly had a lot of problems and we had some of our own. Onward to 2021!

I am so pleased with my latest painting of a Blue Ridge sunset! The effect I am trying to get is coming along and it may not be exactly what I want but it is so close. I hope to finish it in one more session and then I will add it to my portfolio. Love to paint! Live to paint!
I am so pleased that another original Blue Ridge painting has a home in Texas! James River Beauty is from a photograph I took from the bridge over the James River right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. It is always great to get my paintings out to as many places as possible. I hope they will still be around after I am gone. I work very hard at my artwork and I want others to see it.
As always, wall art prints, and prints on just about anything of James River Beauty are available. Click on the link below to see all the possibilities to the right!

Nothing from the Word Man this time but we both got a kick out of another Santa cartoon on Facebook.
We wear our masks and shield everywhere we go. We would only wear masks if everyone else would but everywhere we go there are always people without them, so we feel more protected with the shields.
I’m sure there are people that think we are over doing it but that’s okay. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.
Anyway, Santa was complaining about how long it was taking him to deliver presents. He had to keep going back to his sled to get his mask. LOL!

Well, I had a great session in the studio today as I got closer to the effect I wanted in a sunset. As I have said before, no one can really paint or photograph the sun.
Take a look at a photograph of the sun and then check out the sun. You can’t look at the sun without burning out your eyes. No one can achieve that intensity but it is great to achieve a strong, convincing shadow of it.
I am leaving up the painting that is closest to the effect I am trying to get. We will see!

Love it! The Word Man cracks me up again. It could just be me, but I loved this comment. I am working on a difficult technique in my current painting. I am hopeful to get very close which is all I ever do.
But that is okay. Never boring and they tend to look great after they age a little as I have said many times.
Anyway, Clyde asked me how my session went today.
I am working on a technique that is next door to impossible to achieve.
Where is impossible? I would like to know.
Yikes! That probably makes some, or a lot of people groan, but I laughed big time!

Yea! I had the time to paint this morning and am very pleased with the effect I am trying to get in my latest Blue Ridge painting. I want strong contrast in an end of the day work that still has strong colors in the dark areas which is always tricky. There is a certain glowing sunset effect that I am trying to achieve but it is difficult.
The painting below is the closest I have come so far but I want a stronger light effect. I am counting on the manipulation of the values to pull it out. Second layer is pretty strong, but not strong enough. This painting also has the strong blue clouds like the painting below but I want them to be darker and have that putty look that I often see in sunsets.
Anyway, today is such a great day compared to yesterday. We had to have our water heater replaced. Our washing machine is right next to the water heater and when my son started his laundry, huge amounts of water covered the floor. We didn’t see a loose connection anywhere but that is what it was.
What an ordeal cleaning up all that water!
Be sure to check out my latest youtube above. Very pleased with the strong light in this one. Artists don’t have light on their palette but we can create that illusion.
