Nude Girl Drawings by a Blue Ridge Parkway Artist and Slowing Down a Little…

Nude Girl Drawings by a Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

These two nudes have a strong look with an economy of marks.  The expression in the first one is languid while the second one has a more forceful appearance.  Charcoal has a great range of values and can be easily modified with conte crayons and pastels.  It is a great medium and there is no limit to the expressive possibilities!

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

My husband is better at preventing problems than I am so I am taking some advice he gave me a while back that, I, of course ignored.  He always gets up every thirty minutes when he works on the computer and stretches.  We are both at the seat fatigue years and I let it get so bad that I have a problem so today I am following the rule and trying to slow down a little.  For me, I am working at a snail’s pace.

I have probably shared this quote before but it bears repeating.  When you finally get your head together your body falls apart.  Oscar Wilde was right.  Youth is wasted on the young.  Now that I love my life and just wish someone could add hours to the day I wish I had that twenty year old body again!

Be sure to come see me and my artwork with four other local artists at Glencoe Museum in Radford VA at 6:00 tomorrow evening!  Summer Path at Rock Castle Gorge will be on display along with four other landscapes!

Current Exhibition: Five Years of Art at Glencoe

This season marks the fifth year of Glencoe Museum’s “Gallery at Glencoe,” and to celebrate this milestone, the museum is hosting a series of three shows featuring the works of artists from the previous five years. The three shows will take place in August and November 2014 and February 2015.

The August show features the works of six talented artists whose works range from photography to painting to fiber art. These works reflect many different styles and provide something for everyone to appreciate—from traditional to avant-garde. These artists are Franchell Mack Brown, Alexander Crookshanks, Kendall Kessler, Susan V. Lockwood, Joyce Sims and RL Thomas.

Thank for reading my blog and I hope you enjoy my Nude Girl Drawings!

Riverview at Dusk is one of many sites that my husband researches for bird and butterflies.  He is oftentimes there very early on Saturday and Sunday mornings.  It is a beautiful Radford City Virginia park on The New River.

Difficult Times

The circumstances of my life are rather difficult at times.  I am not going to be specific because of what a friend once said.  What is the use of complaining?  Someone will always complain louder.

Still, most of my friends do not have the problem I have to contend with everyday and sometimes I envy them.  I do not have the freedom most people my age have and there are times I would like to scream and I do.

My husband and I do the best we can and that is all I am going to say.  Enough venting.  I have a lot of work to do.

Another great range mountain range in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains is The Great Smoky mountains.  This is another region my husband, Clyde Kessler, researches for birds and butterflies.  The national park is an extremely popular park.

It was established in 1934 and is the largest national park East of the Rocky Mountains and receives 9-10 million visitors a year.  The park is home to 4000 plant species, 140 tree species and around 1600 black bears.

It is known as the salamander capital of the world with 30 species.

I got this information from 75 facts about the Great Smoky National Park printed in the online publication, Escape to the Smokies

Shadow on a Ridge Near Rocky Knob is another favorite painting from the Rock Castle Gorge section of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I have more paintings from this area of the Blue Ridge Parkway than any other location.  This is where my husband does most of his bird and butterfly research.

He is a well-known naturalist in The New River Valley and has led countless nature hikes in his beautiful home region.

Evenings at Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue Ridge Parkway and The Chocolate Run

My Artwork

I will be taking a break from writing about Rock Castle Gorge and Rocky Knob to show off other beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway Vistas but I still have quite a number of paintings from this site so here I go again!

eveglowrockcastlecopyrightjpgEvening Glow at Rock Castle Gorge  30″x40″   original painting – $2425.00

I have always been drawn to evening scenes.  I doubt you will find many people that don’t like sunsets or sunrises.  I am no exception but I especially like the look of the sky after the sun has gone down and the pink hues tend to predominate the sky.

I will never forget one patron that was very happy with the painting she bought of Mountain Lake in Giles County but decided against one of my New River scenes because there was pink in the sky.  She said she had always seen the orange and purple in the sky but not pink.

She died a number of years ago and whenever I see pink in the sky I think of her.

Life with The Word and Bird Man

My husband, Clyde,  has no problem with cold weather.  He will get up in the middle of the night to check out owl populations for the Audubon Christmas bird counts no matter how cold it is.

After the storm yesterday we were joking around about how he was considering getting out the dog sled to get to the store because I was seriously low on chocolate.

Well, he didn’t get out the sled but he did walk to a nearby store to get a nice lunch and, of course, some chocolate for me!  He really is a nice guy!

Wildflowers at Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue RIdge Parkway and Send out the Dog sleds…

My Artwork

I have quite a number of paintings that are based on scenes from Rock Castle Gorge and views from Rocky Knob.  I am pleased with all of them but if I had to pick favorites it would be the ones that include wildflowers.  The wildflowers are especially beautiful there and make for great color accents in my work.

summerpathcopyrightSummer Path at Rock Castle Gorge   $2425.00

Summer Path at Rock Castle Gorge is one of my favorite landscapes.  My husband took me around to all the paths that were not hiking paths and I especially liked this one because of the colors and the path was grass rather than dirt.  It was probably just a place where a lot of people have walked through to the ridge to see more of the beautiful mountain vista.

My favorite wildflower found there and here in Radford, Virginia is Sweet Pea.  I love all colors but I am especially fond of magenta, probably because it is a red purple so it is both a warm and a cool color.

There is also Red Trillium, white Albultescens, and pink Claytonia virginica in this wonderful Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia.

Here are two more paintings from Rock Castle Gorge.  The first one is another view from Rocky Knob and the other one is a view from another part of the Rocky Knob overlook.

Life with The Bird and Word Man

My husband, Clyde Kessler,  has always kept a close watch on the weather.  He follows all the reports and says some weather forecasters are more accurate than others.  This morning he was quite concerned about the coming  ice and snow storm so he asked me if we needed to get to the store for anything before the roads got bad.

I told him we were seriously low on chocolate.

He said we better send out the dog sled. LOL!

I have so many paintings from Rock Castle Gorge that I think I will be blogging about this gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway attraction for a while.  Hikers especially love the trails at this site and my husband has actually walked as much as eight miles off the trail up and down the mountain to get photographs of butterflies.

His photographer, Bruce Grimes, has to carry heavy equipment to get good photographs and he often has to lie down on his stomach to get the shot.  I have always admired photographers!  Good photography is quite an art and a job!

The actual trail is a loop that is  just short of 11 miles long.

I am especially fond of this oil painting of a road that leads to Rocky Knob.  It is quite an expressive work!

There are so many interesting trails around this area and the wildflowers in season are stunning!

When I was in school I had a teacher that was fond of country and mountain scenes and he remarked to me one time that He especially liked the kind of yellow/white grass seen along the dirt road in the painting at the top.

Most artists have a main medium and a secondary medium.  My main medium is oil paint but my secondary medium is pastels.

I am especially proud of my American Artist Award for “Near Smithfield Plantation”from famed pastelist Daniel Greene.

Life with the Bird and Word Man

  • People often don’t like their photograph and with good reason!  The lens is curved and the resulting parallax can make for a picture that looks how a person looks in a curved piece of metal.  No one wants that!
  • I pride myself that I can work around the parallax but I have been having a hard time lately with my digital camera.  I think the old 35mm cameras had less perspective distortion.

Anyway, I finally got a decent picture of my husband for the publication The Writing Disorder which will feature his poems this Spring.  The tenebristic light made all the difference!
