My guys and I spent some time at the Fourth of July celebration in the park!  We always go there and have fun seeing friends, eating, and playing some of the games.  Lots of fun!  I was so pleased to begin my portrait of Clyde this afternoon!  Nothing like working from a model!  This first stage was just to plan out the space and value patterns and it turned out close to what I wanted but I will be making a lot of changes in the second stage and then the real work will begin.  Clyde was a great model! Perfectly still!

I am trying hard to stay away from another Blue Ridge Mountain painting until I get started on my portrait of Clyde.  If I get involved in another landscape I won’t be able to concentrate on the portrait.  Once I get it started then I can work on some other new ones.  Right now I am working on more Suggestion paintings.  They are done in one studio session so I can free myself up to get the portrait going as soon as Clyde can sit for me.

 Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

If you have read many of my blogs then you know I often get exasperated with the computer.  It is a great machine but it is also very irritating.  Sometimes I am tempted to chuck it right out the window but I know it would creep back in and expect me to fix it up.

Anyway, the other day I called Clyde at work to tell him I had a hole in my pants and a bleeding gash on my leg.  Not a very bad one but it was bleeding!  The computer attacked me!  Okay, I was about to sit down and slammed my leg in to the table it sits on.  I have never done that before and since computers have minds of their own I insist on blaming it for this mishap. 

I think it has heard all of my gripes and decided to strike first.  LOL!

I don’t usually post on forums because it has been my experience that people often misunderstand what I write.  Today I posted a problem with Support on a site and had to spend a lot of time re-iterating my point and fending off rude attacks.  I wish people would carefully read posts before they comment and there is no need to go on the offensive if they disagree. People can disagree politely.  I hate confrontation.  It will be a long time before I post anything there again.

I almost hit my head on the Car Port Ceiling!

My neighbor used to have a bunch of very yappy miniature Dobermans and then they were gone.  Now they are back and I almost hit the carport ceiling yesterday when I got out of my car and one went Napoleon on me at the fence.

 

They sure like to make up for their size by the loudest bark!  They are cute, though.

When my son was young he loved to blow bubbles and my husband bought one of those huge bubble blowers and had all the neighborhood kids standing around him while he sent giant squirming bubbles into the air!

I have been trying all day to get a blog done but this day has shot by so fast I am looking at all the things I needed to do in the rear view mirror! 

My husband had a weird suggestion.  He noticed I still have my mallet and chisel from a sculpture class I took a long time ago.  Maybe I can pound or carve it into a better day that doesn’t fly by? 

Like I said.  Weird suggestion, but what else would you expect  from The Word and Bird Man?

The Mushroom Picker is a languid view of a mushroom picker at Pandapas Pond in Giles County. This is one of many sites that my husband, Clyde, researches for birds and butterflies. On one of his excursions he came upon this man and took a slide of him which I used for the painting. The light in this scene was intense and flickering though out the bank.

It looked like it was dancing around the figure.

My Turn is a delightful pastel painting of a toddler watering flowers. I love to watch children.  They are in a world all their own.  It is no wonder they like to believe in fairies!  The flower garden is on the edge of a woods and the cool foliage colors beautifully accent the warm colors in the girl’s hair and clothing. I live to paint but I also work in pastels and other mediums.

I am very proud of my American Artist Award from famed pastelist Daniel Greene.

Sometimes I like to paint people that I don’t know in an intensely expressive manner.  The vendor here is bathed in coloristic light and strong cool shadows.

Vendor is an expressive, colorful look at a street vendor in a parking lot. The color contrast makes this painting an especially eye-catching work. My work is unique to me but it harkens back to both Impressionism and Expressionism. This painting is one of my more Expressionistic works like the work of Edvard Munch, one of my favorite painters.

Intensity is my most expressive portrait. The color contrast and strong brushwork make this an exciting visual experience. I love to push warm/cool color relations and get them to sing. This painting is a great example of that concept. The man is lost in thought but not oblivious of his surroundings. The shadows add to the expression and emphasize the value patterns that connect the space.

A few days ago a bear was spotted in downtown Radford!  This certainly doesn’t happen very often but the incident inspired my husband to come up with his own report!  Leave it to my husband to turn a scary event into something funny!

 

Early this evening a bear was sighted running a red light in downtown Radford. 

It is supposed that it was late for a fraternity pledge or a movie.  No police officer  bothered to stop it for a ticket.

I love all the arts and will see a ballet this Sunday!  I can’t imagine the discipline it takes to be a professional dancer.  I love my Line Dancing class but it is just for fun and exercise.  To dance for a living!   Wow!
