Now that was Different!

Please click on my latest Youtube!  I plan to put up a new one today!  I wish I knew why I can’t add Youtube music and have my voice at the same time.  I did that for many Youtubes and now when I add music my voice disappears.

Almost every day I have a fried egg with cappuccino for First Breakfast and some weird things have happened when I cooked the egg but today’s incident tops them all!

I like to turn the egg over to make sure it is cooked.  This time the egg slipped halfway out of the pan and part of the egg yolk dripped down the small crack by the side of the stove where I can’t reach.  No problems with Second Breakfast so I guess that was not an indication of how the day will be.   Cheers!

It was Country Girls, not Cowgirls!

Please click on my latest Youtube!

Last night was Line Dance Class and, as usual, I was trying to remember a dance we did a while back.  I am miserable at remembering lyrics and titles but after a while I start to remember part of the melody.  I kept saying it had cowgirls in the title so no one could figure out what I was talking about.  It was country girls!  The song is Country Girls Shake it for Me which is a great tune to dance to!

I hope we do it next class!

My latest painting started out great and then took me through so many twists and turns that I am dizzy.  Painting is hard work and I am starting a new one while this one sulks in the corner for a while.

It is close to done but I have to get away from it.   I hope to have it up soon.  It has a lot of strengths.

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist, Florals, and Quirky Pain…

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

Please click on my latest Youtube!

I am still struggling with my latest Pawleys Island painting but I can see light at the end of the canvas!  It should be done today and then there will be finesse time another day as I fine tune it.  I will be getting back to my main theme which is The Blue Ridge Parkway.  I am looking forward to getting back to this gorgeous region.

For now I thought I would present more of my floral work.  I have made a number of Youtubes on my florals but still have a lot more to show so here are two favorites

tulipburstsmall (2)Tulip Burst Original 10″ x 8″ Oil Painting    $168

Tulip Burst is an exceptionally sensuous, sensitive, whimsical floral. This painting was done from my imagination and I am especially pleased with the color patterns, brushwork, and soft, glowing surface. I love to work with complementary colors and the over all orange blue effect in this one is especially appealing.

If viewers look at each tulip they will see a continual change in color and texture. The color nuances in each flower emphasis the blue-orange color scheme in the whole painting. I like to paint flowers but my favorite flower is the tulip.

Tree Poem   20″ x 16″ Oil Painting    $670

“Tree Poem” is a painting that reminds me of the famous poem, “Trees” by Joyce Kilmer. I consider my work to be visual poetry with complicated systems of color and texture. In this painting I wanted the land, sky, and flowers to visually support the tree.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

A few days ago I was having a strange pain behind my right knee.  It would be intense at times and then go completely away.  I kept thinking it was gone and then it would start up again.  I mentioned this to my husband and said that maybe as we get older we get quirky pains.  His response was that if that is true then his whole body is a quirk.  The joys of getting older.  LOL

It’s Arm Wrestling Time!

Sometimes paintings are extremely aggravating and when I am struggling with one I always think of something one of my professors said to me.  Paintings have to be arm wrestled down.  That is the truth!

You go one way and then back the other way until it really works!   My latest is about to drive me crazy but I decided long ago to maintain a sense of humor and not let them take me down.

I will always love to paint no matter how much of a hassle they are at times.

This Blue Ridge pastel painting is one of my favorites!  The wildflowers and color in the sky create a serene, beautiful mood.  I could never be sad in a place like this!

I have always been what artists call a colorist.  I carefully construct my work according to what I consider to be good principles of art and design but the colors always take off and lead the way in the expression.

So far I have two painting of Buffalo Mountain.  In this one the mountain with it’s distinctive hump is a little left of center on the bottom.  I am especially pleased with the energetic cloud effect.

The Man Who Moved a Mountain

In yesterday’s blog I mentioned Bob Childress, who is known as the man who moved a mountain.  Here is a little more about him.

Bob Childress was born into the then isolated Buffalo mountain community that was full of violence and alcoholism.  He said his earliest memory was of his mother nursing his illness by holding a rag soaked in whisky to his mouth.

He was unable to attend school and often resorted to violence and began drinking heavily. He vowed to quit drinking after he witnessed a massacre at a court house. He entered law enforcement and eventually became a minister.  He returned to high school at the age of 30 in the same room school as his 6 year old son.

He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1926 and was in demand by churches throughout Virginia and the Eastern United States.  His desire was to return to his Appalachian community to help eradicate the violence and ignorance of the region.

Through his 40 years of ministry he built and led congregations at 6 “Rock Churches” of which 5 remain today.  In 2002, the Churches were submitted to the National Register of Historic Places as the Reverend Robert Childress Presbyterian Churches.

Not bad for a boy from an alcoholic community!

I gained this information from my husband, Clyde Kessler, and from Wikopedia.

Life with the Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Before I write about something my husband said the other day I want to make sure everyone knows he is very well liked by all that come into contact with him and is one of the most diplomatic people I have ever met.

A few days ago we were talking about parties.  I am a painfully shy person so I don’t really like to be around more than a few people at a time.  My husband is essentially a very nice curmudgeon.

He said he wouldn’t go to his own party!  LOL

Another gorgeous mountain vista off The Blue Ridge Parkway is Buffalo mountain.  The name comes from the strong hump on the ridge.  Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church was built by the Reverent Robert Childress who was the subject for the book “The Man Who Moved a Mountain”  This is a great book that I highly recommend!

Buffalo Mountain in Fall is one of my favorite Blue Ridge Mountain landscapes.  The colors of light and shade in fall are especially beautiful.  The violet is  intense and it is difficult to paint the atmospheric effect and not lose the cool colors in the warm colors.  They look as if they are floating together in space.

When Pigs Fly by my Window

I am a workaholic.  It is extremely important to me to sell my work.  I can’t take them with me and I hope they will all have homes when I am gone.  I depend on friends to get me out once in a while, but mostly I am either painting or working at promotion strategies.

Saturday I told my self I ought to try to take a break and rest.  Right as that thought was going through my head a pig flew by my window and winked!   Of course, I didn’t take it easy but I did get a lot of work done!

Life with the Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

You know you live with The New River Valley Bird Man when Lowes calls you up to ask how to get a hawk out of their store.  This happened a few minutes ago and I left a message with Clyde at work since he is away from his desk right now.

I know he will know what to do!
