 Tiger Stare is an intense, expressive painting from my series Kendall Expressions. My work has always had Expressionistic elements combined with Impressionistic elements. In these works I am emphasizing my expressive side. I am very pleased with the look in the tiger’s eyes and the linear patterns of the stripes. The painting is on stretched canvas without frame.

I have mentioned two bruises I cannot account for and both times my husband had a quip of how I am probably smacking him at night to stop his snoring.  He is still congested and that is usually the only time he snores.

Well, yesterday I mentioned that my thumb on my left hand is sore.  Of course his explanation is that I am probably poking him the eye since the hand slap and kick didn’t stop the snoring.

I seriously doubt I am attacking my husband when I am sleeping but his quips do make me laugh!

“Shadows on Sunflowers” is an intimate look at some sunflowers in a vase against a backdrop of shifting light. The swirling textures enliven the surface and the colors are intense. The brushwork is complicated and sensuous.

I have always been fascinated with the colors of light and shade. I remember reading somewhere that many people consider warm and cool colors together to be like the music of the spheres.

North Albemarle, McLean, VA is one of my series of garden paintings in McLean where I am from. This is a low-level impasto painting with a constant variation in color. The mood is cheerful and the surface is complex. The painting is in a silver-colored metal frame.

Clyde is very good about helping me with a stir fry meal I like to make.  I am not much of a cook but this is one meal I make that I really like!  I was extremely tired last night and when he asked me which pot I was going to use to par boil the broccoli and snow peas, I said the big round one. 

I cracked up but he was not amused.  I wonder if there are any other shaped pots.

So much to do before I head out to Draper for a Christmas Line Dance Performance!  We do a lot of Christmas dances and I hope this one goes well.  It is amazing how things can mess up.  One time I was so close to some sort of box on stage that I nearly tripped!  This stage is small so I hope no one falls off.  Cheers!

Hanging Beauty is an intense oil pastel painting of flowers on our veranda. The strong light effect creates a beautiful atmosphere and great warm/cool color contrast. My husband, Clyde Kessler, is a well-known naturalist in the New River Valley and in addition to his bird and butterfly knowledge, he is also very knowledgeable about flowers and good at growing them. He has the green thumb in the family. Mine is usually covered in oil paint.

Rose Start is a glowing oil pastel of our rose bush when it was first starting out. We have a small white fence around it to protect it. I have always been fascinated with the look of white objects in the evening. They seem to glow from with-in and I captured that look in this work. Carnival Evening by Henri Rousseau is a great example of this effect. I especially enjoy looking at that painting for the use of the white that creates a magical effect.

Like any married couple we have learned a lot about our different backgrounds over the years.  One thing my mother did that Clyde’s mother did not do was repeat helpful sayings.  I heard these so many times that they got to be quite irritating and the most irritating thing was I was too stubborn to apply them to my life.   The one I hate the most to this day is Penny wise and Pound foolish.   I am amazed at the number of times I have chosen the cheap route that ended up costing me more later.  I actually make Clyde come with me to the store to help me buy certain items so I won’t get stuck with the cheap one that caught my eye.  He always gets the better item, usually the medium priced one.

 

Anyway I like to change some of those sayings and the other night when I was fooling with laundry late in the evening I said to Clyde, “Women’s work is never done and it ain’t no fun.”  I think that is an improvement on that one.

I think I have mentioned before that I am some what of a freak of nature, a girl that does not like to shop.  My husband hates to shop and our son isn’t into it either so that is why we are still at home.  It takes a lot more than bargains to get us out of here.  I think if the house burned down we would have to visit some stores.

A while back I wrote about a mouse that had settled into our kitchen.  My husband bought a trap that was designed to catch the mouse and then re-locate it.  The mouse was caught and my husband took it down to the river.  He said the mouse looked at him with the saddest eyes.  It was, of course, perfectly happy living in a cozy home and snacking on our food.

A few days ago when I opened one of the shelf doors a horrible smell came out.  I have been cleaning out the space and haven’t found a thing that would cause such a horrible smell.  I told my husband that maybe a relative of the first mouse that knew about the trap avoided it and died a natural death behind the shelves where we can’t get it.  Revenge is sweet!

I can’t Believe I am looking up Directions for a Meat Thermometer

For umpteen years we have gone to my husband’s home for Thanksgiving, but for some reason my mother-in-law wants us to celebrate on Sunday this year.  Well, that was not good enough for my son so we are having two Thanksgiving dinners .

 

I hardly ever roast meat in the oven that takes a long time.  I taught for many years and just didn’t have the time for that.  My husband and I were concerned that a meat thermometer would be harmed if it were in the oven too long.  Shows how much we know.  I looked it up.  No problem.
