Love Those Fall Colors Right out my Window!

Please click on my Youtube and send it to Stumbleupon!

The trees I can see from my window are so beautiful right now!  I love to see the yellows, oranges, and reds but I especially like the trees that have green leaves and red ones at the same time.  They don’t call me the Red/Green Painter for nothing!

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist, People Paintings, and Hawk Migration!

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

I am pleased to blog about my people paintings.  They are very important to me.  My two favorite models are my son and my husband.

I have done a number of paintings of both of them over the years and plan to do a new one of my husband when I can find some time and he is not out studying nature on a mountain top!

Clydeal (1)Clyde and Alan  Original Oil Painting has been Sold

Prints on Paper or Canvas and Greeting Cards Available at   KENDALL KESSLER ART

This painting is of Alan when he was a few months old.  Clyde did not like to sit in a rocking chair so when he put him to sleep he would lie down and rock him.

I noticed that almost every time he held him in his arms, Alan would go to sleep.  I guess he associated Daddy’s arms with bed time.

This painting is of Alan when he was a toddler.  He liked to stare out the window.  I am especially pleased with the energetic brush work in this painting.  Frank Webb commented at a competition that I was able to weave paint together in a very impressive way.

I won one of the cash awards at the show.

Life with The Bird and Word Man – Clyde Kessler

Fall is Hawk migration time and hundreds are flying over! Two of Clyde’s friends, Tom Moser and Todd Frederickson led a hawk watch at Rocky Knob with a class and there were 500 hawks, mostly Broad-winged hawks.

I Was Wrong!

I was so sure I had remembered the tune that we danced Country Walking to but when I hummed it to the teacher she said that wasn’t it!  Oh well.  I hope she finds the right one in her CD collection.  It was a great tune!

Check out another one of my Youtube videos!

Here are two more nudes that I am especially fond of!  In this case I like the black and white version better than the color.  I like the extensive color modulations in the second one but there is a visual drama in the first one that I think it extremely captivating!

Another one of my recent paintings from my Kendall Expressions.  In these paintings I am letting my expressive side take over!   We sure wish we could get some rain.  We are so dry right now.

The Ghost of Chicken Alley

Chicken Alley is a small, narrow alley in Downtown Asheville. Named because of the chickens that would congregate there in the city’s earlier days, the most prominent chicken found today in Chicken Alley is the one in the large mural by local artist Molly Must that decorates the entrance.

Dr. Jamie Smith was a physician who practiced in Asheville at the end of the Nineteenth Century. He always carried his medicine bag and a cane with a silver pommel on it. He was known as a man who loved a good time.

Asheville was a rougher city in those days. Men who worked in the logging camps and nearby industries would flood the town on weekends looking for a drink and some company.  Liquor flowed freely, virtue was easily bought and sold, and Dr. Smith loved every minute of it. There are those who say that the majority of his practice came treating the various social diseases that were the constant companions of the city’s good times.

All of this came to an end in 1902, when Dr. Smith walked in to a bar called Broadway’s Tavern, which was located in Chicken Alley. In a case of remarkably bad timing, Smith happened to stumble into the middle of a vicious bar brawl. He tried to break it up, but was stabbed in the heart by one of the men in the fight. He died instantly.

Jamie Smith’s murderer was never caught. Broadway’s Tavern burned to the ground the year after the fatal stabbing.

Ever since that night, people have reported seeing a strange figure walking in the alley late at night.  He carries an old-fashioned physician’s bag and a cane with a silver head.

The people who live Chicken Alley believe that this is the ghost of Dr. Jamie Smith. He has been seen for over 100 years, and throughout that time the figure’s appearance has been described with remarkable consistency. Dr. Smith’s fashion sense was apparently distinctive enough to make him recognizable even beyond the grave. The locals are divided as to the reason his spirit returns to the spot where he met his end. Some say he is still trying to stop the fight. Some say he still just wants a drink.

How to Get There

Chicken Alley is located in downtown Asheville between Broadway and Lexington. The Alley runs between Carolina Lane and Woodfin Street, and the entrance on Woodfin is clearly distinguishable by the large chicken mural.

Beautiful Buffalo Mountain on The Blue RIdge Parkway and When Pigs Fly by my Window…

My Artwork

Another gorgeous mountain vista off The Blue Ridge Parkway is Buffalo mountain.  The name comes from the strong hump on the ridge.  Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church was built by the Reverent Robert Childress who was the subject for the book “The Man Who Moved a Mountain”  This is a great book that I highly recommend!

Buffalo Mountain in Fall is one of my favorite Blue Ridge Mountain landscapes.  The colors of light and shade in fall are especially beautiful.  The violet is  intense and it is difficult to paint the atmospheric effect and not lose the cool colors in the warm colors.  They look as if they are floating together in space.

When Pigs Fly by my Window

I am a workaholic.  It is extremely important to me to sell my work.  I can’t take them with me and I hope they will all have homes when I am gone.  I depend on friends to get me out once in a while, but mostly I am either painting or working at promotion strategies.

Saturday I told my self I ought to try to take a break and rest.  Right as that thought was going through my head a pig flew by my window and winked!   Of course, I didn’t take it easy but I did get a lot of work done!

Life with the Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

You know you live with The New River Valley Bird Man when Lowes calls you up to ask how to get a hawk out of their store.  This happened a few minutes ago and I left a message with Clyde at work since he is away from his desk right now.

I know he will know what to do!

Wildflowers at Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue RIdge Parkway and Send out the Dog sleds…

My Artwork

I have quite a number of paintings that are based on scenes from Rock Castle Gorge and views from Rocky Knob.  I am pleased with all of them but if I had to pick favorites it would be the ones that include wildflowers.  The wildflowers are especially beautiful there and make for great color accents in my work.

summerpathcopyrightSummer Path at Rock Castle Gorge   $2425.00

Prints on paper or canvas at kendall-kessler.artistwebsites.com

Summer Path at Rock Castle Gorge is one of my favorite landscapes.  My husband took me around to all the paths that were not hiking paths and I especially liked this one because of the colors and the path was grass rather than dirt.  It was probably just a place where a lot of people have walked through to the ridge to see more of the beautiful mountain vista.

My favorite wildflower found there and here in Radford, Virginia is Sweet Pea.  I love all colors but I am especially fond of magenta, probably because it is a red purple so it is both a warm and a cool color.

There is also Red Trillium, white Albultescens, and pink Claytonia virginica in this wonderful Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia.

Here are two more paintings from Rock Castle Gorge.  The first one is another view from Rocky Knob and the other one is a view from another part of the Rocky Knob overlook.

Life with The Bird and Word Man

My husband, Clyde Kessler,  has always kept a close watch on the weather.  He follows all the reports and says some weather forecasters are more accurate than others.  This morning he was quite concerned about the coming  ice and snow storm so he asked me if we needed to get to the store for anything before the roads got bad.

I told him we were seriously low on chocolate.

He said we better send out the dog sled. LOL!

Rocky Knob on The Blue Ridge Parkway and I Just don’t Understand it…

My husband’s favorite perch is Rocky Knob which overlooks Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue Ridge Parkway.  It is called Rocky Knob because the field is full of rocks. When my son was young he and a friend would run down the field to one of the larger rocks to play on.  I think my husband is more content on this perch than anywhere else on the parkway.

I will always have a picture in my mind of him sitting in his chair holding his binoculars or walking the trails with friends and relatives.

The painting at the top is one view of Rock Castle Gorge from Rocky Knob.  I have done many paintings of the different views of Rock Castle Gorge.

The black bear has made quite a comeback in the Blue Ridge Mountains which is great but hikers need to be aware of them and tread carefully.

On one visit to Rocky Knob my husband and son were coming back up the field at Rocky Knob and a bear was coming after them.  My husband wasn’t aware of the bear but my son called out BEAR.

My husband turned around and reached up high in the air with a stick he was carrying and yelled at the charging bear.  The bear took off and I am very grateful that my son was paying close attention to what was going on and that my husband knew what to do.

Life with The Bird and Word Man

Over the years I have taken many pictures of my husband that I have based paintings on and others he has used for promotion purposes for Poetry magazines.

I just don’t understand why the pictures I take of him now aren’t as great as the ones I took when we were first married!  Must be the digital camera!  LOL
