Wow! I discovered a strange way to save paint on my palette. A week ago I accidentally spilled a little mineral spirits into my cadmium red light and it has not dried up at all and I have been able to use it rather than replace it with fresh paint.
That is so weird! I could see linseed oil doing that but not mineral spirits. Sometimes I put out more paint than I need. It is always so hard to know how much of the painting I am going to change and sometimes I end up just adding a few dabs here and there.
Any oil painters that are reading this know how expensive good oil paint is. My paintings cost a lot to make and I am always glad to find ways to keep from wasting paint.
Anyway, just about done with my latest and I am pleased with it! Just have to be careful not to over think it and wreck it.
Cheers on a Monday! Please check out my latest Youtube above!Mid-Spring on The New River Original 34″ x 23″ Oil Pastel painting $1534

Not much to say except we are very excited about the house we may be moving into this summer! Artist and writers need a lot of space that we don’t have right now. The house we are looking at will be perfect for us! Now we need to get busy and fix up the one we have.
Not looking forward to that but it has to be done. I think my painting time is going to shrink even more than now. Ouch! Oh well, I think I can get going with my latest one tomorrow. First stage is done and now to get to the second, hopefully without cussing. I never know.
Anyway, please check out my latest youtube above. This time I was planning on an abstract but when it was done I thought some birds would make for great accents. I like the way it turned out!
As you can see by my selections from my portfolio, I am really missing the shore so much!

It is a beautiful day but I missed the morning light so I can’t get to the next layer of my current painting. So much to do all the time and I am trying hard to catch up while the computer fights me.
This morning it decided to just spin and spin and spin so I had to turn it off. Can’t click on the restart button if it is spinning. When I turned it back on that little line partly filled up but I didn’t think it would ever completely finish. I wish my computer liked me more.
Maybe computers don’t like artists that work in the old fashioned way of applying paint to a canvas rather than using a computer for paintings on paper. Computer art is just not for me even though I see some great examples every day. I much prefer to apply layers and then get to a final layer that has a unique elevated surface.
Anyway, tomorrow I hope to get to my new lake painting. It will be another sunset and only 8″ x 10″ so I won’t be intimidated by the cost of paint. It is hard to believe there was a time when I painted in such thin layers that the cost of the paint was not an issue at all. Not anymore!
The virus stats in our area are increasing by quite a bit every day and there are more hospital stays and deaths.
Please wear a mask. If you think they are not necessary, just humor the rest of us! It is the nice thing to do. Be nice!!

Still working on Music without Words paintings and looking forward to one more, this time a large one with a lot of depth. I know that the illusion of depth is the main reason I like to work from nature most of the time.
Since I like that effect in my representational works I think it will be a good idea to incorporate depth in a non-figurative one. I have some ideas in my head and I hope to start tomorrow. Today has been a whirlwind of computer work that is still not done. Hope to get finished soon but I usually work in the evenings, too.
Oh well, this is the life I have chosen. If I could give up painting I wouldn’t be working so hard to promote it but I can’t give it up so back to promo!
Cheers!

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler
Yesterday I was washing dishes when I remembered I did not have my glasses on. I can’t get them clean without my glasses. I was so surprised when I remembered they were on my head I had to run and tell Clyde.
Clyde, I now know for sure there is hope for me.
You got a big enough shovel to send me out the door?
No, I remembered I had my glasses on my head and didn’t run all over the house to find them. And they don’t make shovels that big.
Maybe you can take two snow shovels and attach them together.
Too much work. Back to the dishes.
I would greatly appreciate a Google review if you like my work! Here is the link!
I was just looking at the oscar awards for this year and I have heard many people say they are pleased with the results. I used to keep up with the oscars since I am such a movie buff but I don’t follow them now that there is no end to the type of movies I can get on Netflix and at the library.
I have found so many great independent films and foreign films that I have bought a number of them. I have quite a collection and keep adding to it. I love all kinds of movies and admire all the people that take part in producing them.
I will definitely check out the winners when I get more time, especially At Eternity’s Gate starring Willem Defoe. I am a big fan of his and there are two lesser known films that he starred in that I want to order. Victory and The Reckoning. Sam Neil also stars in Victory and I think it was one of, if not, his most powerful performances.
I even have a fantastic restored version of The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari which is one of the first horror films. By today’s standards it is not that frightening but it is one of my all time favorite movies. When it was first shown in Germany people were screaming in their seats. How times change!
I could go on and on. I still agree with those that think Citizen Kane is the greatest film ever made. I think the main reason I am so impressed with it is the cinematography. Orson Welles was a painter and the compositions in Citizen Kane are fantastic!
Anyway, back to my work. I was going to start another wildflower painting but I am thinking of painting a home flower garden. I love the way some people arrange their flowers.
So many ideas, so little time. Cheers on a Monday!

My phone is always beeping and booping at me. It makes a type of bell sound every time Facebook adds something. When someone wants to contact me directly I get a sound that makes me think of the game of ping pong.
Anyway, the other day it started sounding off and I told Clyde I had to talk to my phone too much of the time. He said he wished it would sprout wings and go fly off a cliff.
Gee, do you think Clyde hates cell phones?

Nothing from the Word Man today but I did see something on Facebook that I knew he would like. He has a business page but is too much of a curmudgeon to have a personal page. The joke was, I don’t think Facebook has taught the lame to walk but it has caused the dumb to speak. No offense to anyone that loves Facebook! Just thought it was a good funnie!

The patron for my latest commission came by yesterday and was very pleased with the painting and also with many of my other paintings. He is interested in bringing his wife by and selecting others. He also has some reverse glass paintings that he would like me to restore. Great visit with a great patron! He brought a friend that works with him in his business and he had many compliments on my work! I don’t have the painting on my website for prints yet but it will be there soon. I am officially cheered up and looking forward to Line Dance class today!

The other day I had so much to do that I just didn’t want to get the evening dishes done. I had already done dishes earlier and many other things so I just stared at them. I told Clyde that even though it was freezing outside he would have to put up with a few minutes of cold while I heaved the dishes out the front door.
A cat may try to lick one and get it’s tongue stuck.
That is a chance I will have to take. Maybe I will hit a few of those ground hogs that converge on our property.
Not a chance. They are hibernating under the shed next door and laughing about the times they have eaten all our apples.
Well, put on your sweater because here I go! The dishes will fly!

I am so pleased to sell a wall art print of Mabry Mill in Fall to a great Texas patron! This is one of my favorite fall paintings of this beautiful sight in The Meadows of Dan. Tourists stream to this old mill all the time. When we visited it there were people all over the beautiful grounds. It is one of the most popular attractions on The Blue Ridge Parkway! If you are ever in Virginia be sure to check it out!

Clyde and I have been catching up on the great TV sitcom Married with Children. I was too busy to watch TV when it was on and didn’t know what a hilarious show it is! The actors are terrific and the writers are fantastic!
The humor, especially the barbs that come out of Al’s mouth, are so like Clyde’s humor that I accused him of writing it and hiding the money in a Swiss bank account.
Yeah, and look at those pigs flying by the window and don’t wait for me while I take a very expensive cruise around the world.
Tell me that isn’t something Al would say! You know it is!

New Years Eve! Time for resolutions or, as I saw on Facebook – the to do list for the first week of January. Well, I don’t really make any resolutions. I just keep on trying to improve. I have some ideas for more art promotion that I hope will be helpful. Too much to do to pick out certain tasks for resolutions.
I am ending the year on a nice note! Sold another print of Memphis Lights to a great Tennessee patron! This Skyline Beauty painting is certainly very popular! So I look forward to 2019 and hope it is a great one very all of us. Happy New Year!

Yesterday Clyde noticed a real nice colorful hat at a store in Christmas colors. He was thinking of buying it when he noticed what the design was. He pointed it out to me and I realized the red and green motiff was of marijauna leaves.
I said I guess that hat is for people that want to have a Hempy Christmas.
Clyde added and a Hempy Hemp New Year!
Not going to buy one. I am crazy enough without wearing something that will make people think I am a pot head.
