A Break in the Clouds is my best-selling painting on my website! 

A Break in the Clouds is a colorful view of Rock Castle Gorge which is near Rocky Knob on the Blue RIdge Parkway where my husband does much of his research on birds and butterflies. This painting has the most complex system of clouds of all of my landscapes. I am always fascinated with various atmospheric effects in this beautiful mountain region.

My husband is always playing with words which is a lot of fun for me.  I love word play.  He definitely married his best audience.  I knew he wrote before we got married but I didn’t know how much fun his word play was until afterwards.  I have been either laughing or fascinated by his creativity ever since.

His latest one is on the human race.   I believe if people would take the study of History seriously then we wouldn’t keep repeating events that cause us harm.

Since we keep repeating errors Clyde has decided that the origin of the phrase human race was because we keep going around and around in circles.  I hope we never get to a finish line, but we certainly have been capable of the end of the world scenario for a long time.  Anyone that isn’t aware of that fact should brush up on their knowledge of History. 

It is my opinion that History is the most important subject in school.  I wish everyone agreed with that.  Oh well, some of Clyde’s word play is more thoughtful than funny.  I like it all!

We are having a heat wave!  After all of those days we had to drip water to keep the pipes from freezing, 45 degrees is certainly a heat wave!  I still don’t want to walk.  It is very windy and I have got to get back to swimming now that the roads are okay.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Radford is awaiting a huge snow storm and Clyde has a lot of bird seed out.   He has been griping about the squirrels.  They get a lot of the seed.  According to the Bird Man, squirrels get lazy in the winter and go on Bird Seed Welfare.

I asked him what the squirrels are supposed to do.  Don’t they just hide away with their nuts?  He said if that were true, they would be in here with us.

Droll, very droll.

Magenta Fall is a lovely Autumn scene on The Blue Ridge Parkway. In this vista the Fall colors are as exciting as the colors in the evening sky. A feast for the eyes! I live in the most beautiful place in the world!

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Clyde watches a lot of nature programs and oftentimes they are on when I am in the studio so I can hear them, too.   The other day I heard an announcer say that even though the grizzly bear was a long way off he was still glad to see one.

That struck me as an odd thing to say so I called out to Clyde that if I were in Grizzly country I would not want to see  one close up.  His answer was that he would prefer a satellite shot since he didn’t think they can jump that high.  Great exaggeration from the Word Man!

Clyde is a dedicated naturalist but, as I have mentioned before, he really doesn’t want to go anywhere where the wildlife is waiting for him with a knife and fork as soon as he gets off the bus. 

This isn’t entirely true as he has spent countless hours walking up and down the Blue Ridge mountains and had some close calls with black bears.  I guess hanging around grizzlies is one step too far!

Yesterday I had a lot to do as always but I wanted to try to catch up on my photography.  My artwork has to be photographed outside for prints to be available on my website.

 

It is very tricky work but I thought the light was okay so I got out there late in the afternoon.  Usually I only get a few good ones and have to re-take the others.  This time I got 100%!  Yea!!!!

As I have mentioned before I have always had to watch what I eat.  Unlike many people I talk to I was never able to eat what I wanted without gaining weight.  I continue to fight the Battle of the Bulge and don’t see an end in sight.

For Thanksgiving I brought a carrot cake to my mother-in-laws.  I always bring something but she prefers to cook most of the dinner.  Unfortunately the carrot cake wasn’t a big hit so it came home with us.  I asked my husband to take it to work with him so his office could enjoy it.  He forgot but said he would take it the next day.  It was still there and it was calling to me but cake is one thing I hardly ever eat because I eat too much of it.

I solved the problem.  I taped a note that said, “Take me with you”, on the container.  He leaves early in the morning and I was pleased to see it was gone! 

Now where are those chocolate chip cookies I made?

Yesterday I was talking to my husband about shingles as we were reminded by the TV for the umpteenth time to get the vaccine.  I was surprised that he hadn’t gotten one yet.  I got mine a year ago and now I have to remember to get one every seven years.  I have heard how awful shingles are so I do want to prevent an outbreak.

My husband wasn’t concerned.  He has a lot of pain in various parts of his body due to two different falls.  His response was why should he get a shingles shot.  The shingles would be just one more pain to deal with.  Take a number!

I’m not much for nagging but I think I will try to get him to get the shot.

Shadow of Things to Come is a portrait of my son, Alan, when he began school. I loosely based this on a photograph. This is my most expressive portrait.
