If you don’t like to swim laps because it is boring, swim the breast stroke with a friend!  It is amazing how fast those laps are done when you are yakking away the time!  I did that yesterday and it was great!

Here is my latest Skyline Beauty painting of Richmond.  In this one I used colors I don’t usually use and much looser brushwork.IMG_3084

Life with The Bird and Word Man – Clyde Kessler

Last Wednesday I was watching TV in the living room when I saw a rather large object coming down the hall way.  It was too big to be an insect so I knew it had to be a mouse.  When I approached it, it ran into a closet.  I told Clyde and he said once you have a mouse in the house, you usually have more.  They are hard to get rid of.

This is our third mouse.  Clyde got out the mouse traps and had forgotten how to set them.  I am always griping about computers but they certainly can be a big help.  He looked up the brand and there was a video on how to set them.  He went into the the kitchen and yelled to me that if I heard a scream, then he did it wrong.

No scream!  Yes!  I hope we catch the little stinker.  May all your homes be mouse free!

The mouse trap cartoon is from an ad for pest removal.  I doubt that they will mind that I used it here since I am including the link to their business.

I am looking forward to getting into the studio to work on another Skyline Beauty painting and another Kendall Expressions painting.  One of these days I will take a break and get back to my oil paintings.  I am really in the acrylic groove right now so I will continue with them a little longer and then it is back to what I love the most – sensuous oil paintings of this beautiful area of Virginia!  Below is one of my favorites!

Life with The Bird and Word Man – Clyde Kessler

Years ago Clyde made a comment as we all went to vote that I like very much.  He said we need to hold our noses and vote.  I wish that were not true, but it usually is.  I am glad that in this presidential election there is one candidate that I hope will get to be on the ticket but I doubt that will happen.

Anyway, I was surprised to see the same phrase in The Roanoke Times online news today.  The gist of the article is that Obama is receiving a rise in popularity due to a lot of different positive factors.  The writer then goes on to say that “as many in the United States hold their noses as we search for the next president, they’re  increasingly  warming  to the one they already have…”

So Clyde isn’t the only one that uses that phrase to prepare to vote!  Love it!

Life with The Bird and Word Man – Clyde Kessler

That female cardinal is either going to get rid of the hussy in the window or die trying.  The first thing I do in the morning is practice my piano music for a half and hour.  I don’t have time to practice more.  I wish I did.

Since the cardinal is now trying to scare her image away that obviously moved to the living room window after Clyde papered the computer room window, she is adding a beat that I don’t want.  I have always found timing to be a little difficult and would prefer a conductor but this is ridiculous.  She is not keeping time at all!

I have a metronome but I am not a robot so that doesn’t help either. I change the tempo to suit my expression.  I don’t want the cardinal to pummel itself to death, but I wish it would give up.

Oh well, The Bird Man wanted me to announce a rather rare siting today – A Forsters Tern was spotted in Radford, VA this morning.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

As I said last time for some strange reason, Clyde has been associated with The Big Foot legend by one of Alan’s friends. We often laugh about that, especially considering Clyde’s small shoe size.

I also mentioned a movie on a search for Big Foot that Clyde jokingly said he starred in.  Well, we watched the movie and it was quite funny at the beginning and then deadly serious at the end.  Clyde confessed that he walked off the set when realized it wasn’t a comedy.  We liked the movie but I was disappointed that Clyde wasn’t really in it.  LOL!

The Legend of Tom Dooley

In 1866, a woman named Laura Foster was murdered in Wilkes County. A man named Tom Dula, pronounced “Dooley”, was convicted and hanged for the crime. That murder and the name Tom Dooley lives on in one of the most famous folk songs ever to come out of North Carolina.

The story of a dashing Tom Dula that returns home from the war to fall in love with a young woman that was being courted by a school teacher is not the accurate story.  If you would like to read the true story you can find it in Stories from The Mountains online publication.  I would rather stick to the fanciful, romantic one.  Laura Foster was being courted by Bob Grayson. Foster fell in love with Tom Dula, but so did another woman, Anne Melton. Melton was married, wealthy, beautiful, and insanely jealous. Learning that Dula was in love with Foster, not her, Anne Melton stabbed Laura Foster to death in a jealous rage.

Tom Dula was blamed for the murder. Tula fled, heading for Tennessee. Bob Grayson headed a posse to hunt down Tom Dula, and he was dragged back to Wilkes County. Dula, realizing that it was Anne Melton who committed the crime, confesses out of a chivalrous desire to save her from a death by hanging.

On May 1, 1868, Tom Dula was executed for the murder of Laura Foster. Grayson returned home to the North. Anne Melton went slowly insane from guilt.

It’s this version of the tale, a complicated story story that ends in the death of an innocent man, that became immortalized in a folk song that circulated in North Carolina for nearly 100 years before it was made nationally famous by the Kingston Trio in 1958. Their recording of the ballad Tom Dooley reached #1 on the Billboard R&B charts, and rose to the top of the country music charts.

THE REAL STORY IS SOMETHING ELSE!

I got this story from Stories from The Mountains online publication

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

My husband is a cautious man.  He is great about car up keep and is always advising me on the weather.  He is also very cautious with fireworks.  We only use sparklers due to all the accidents every year with the other ones.  What I didn’t know is sparklers are much more dangerous than most people think they are.

Sparklers remain one of the most dangerous fireworks in terms of accident statistics simply because they are taken for granted. Year after year people underestimate the dangers of these traditional items and get burnt.

Be sure to have a bucket of water nearby and only light one at a time.  Many accidents have occurred when two of these extremely hot sticks (several hundred degrees celsius) cross and cause a flare up.

So be Safe!

The Beautiful James River off The Blue Ridge Parkway and More Blue Ridge Discovery Center News

My Artwork

I have always loved water.  When I was a child I spent as much time as I could playing at a creek near our house.  I loved the sound of the water and walking on the rocks.

Creeks, rivers, and, of course, the ocean are places I would rather be than anywhere else.  Much of my artwork includes water.

I am especially pleased with the peaceful moods I captured from two views of the James River off the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This is another site my husband researches for bird and butterfly species.

I will never forget how beautiful the water looked and how magical the reflections were on this day.  My husband, I, and our son Alan walked all around this location and this painting is the view from the walkway bridge under the Harry Flood Byrd Memorial bridge which was constructed in 1959 . I am especially pleased with the complicated system of greens in this painting and the colors reflected in the perfectly still water.
