Not much to say today.  We had a nice Thanksgiving and I am pleased that I finished my new sailboat painting.  I haven’t added it to my portfolio yet, but I will do that soon.  I liked the way it turned out but there was something I was aiming for that I have never been able to get to look the way I want it to look, so I am going to include that in my next painting and try again. 

Salvador Dali once said you shouldn’t worry about attaining perfection.  You never will.  That is true, but, like I told my students, you will never get exactly what you want, but if you work hard, you can get close.  That is good enough for me.  I learned long ago to not expect perfection but just let them live. 

I am so pleased that three prints of a favorite Pawleys Island painting will be on t-shirts!  A great Pawleys Island patron bought them.  Below is the painting with print selections from my website and at the end is the link to t-shirts on Zazzle.  Check it out!

Nothing from Clyde lately.  He usually has a lot of humor to offset sad circumstances but not so much during this difficult time.  Anyway, we both liked a great cartoon on Facebook!  A blind farmer is walking through a field of turkeys holding a hatchet.  Of course, the turkeys were all saying moo!  Love it!

Such a beautiful day!  Great to see so much sunshine!  I like cloudy days, too, but sometimes there are too many of them in a row. 

My latest painting is at that most difficult stage.  Is it done or not? Do I let it live the way it is or is there more to do.  If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is how to let them live.  We artists tend to get so wrapped up in one that we don’t see what is successful about it- only the faults. 

I am going to paint some more small ones.  It is great to be able to move on faster to the next one.  Since my current painting is a sailboat sunset, I decided to post some favorite boat paintings this time. 

Love the water and will be so glad to get back to the shore next year if the pandemic is under control.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

As I have mentioned before, Clyde doesn’t like computers and, in spite of their usefullness, thinks they are trojan horses that have caused a lot of harm. He is especially critical of comments on social media that used to be just idle comments among small groups in bars or parties. 

He thinks broadcasting these opinions are not helpful and contribute to a lot of disinformation that people accept as truth. 

Anyway, I was doing some online yoga when the teacher said, and now place yours arms in this twist position. 

And now pick up some rocks and throw them at the computer. 

Why would I want to damage the computer? 

Why not? Look at all the damage it has done to us. 

Okay.  Get outside to Backyardica and check out the birds. That will help!  I need to stretch.

Another beautiful day!  I am so pleased to sell another print of my most popular Skyline Beauty painting, Richmond on the James!  This time the sale is another Christmas ornament to a great Maryland patron. Well, as usual, my latest painting started out great and it was a lot of fun and now I am struggling and will probably completely change it.  This one is following the usual course most paintings follow and now I am in the difficult stage. No real problem!  I love what I do and it is always worth the struggle.

It is a beautiful day but I missed the morning light so I can’t get to the next layer of my current painting.  So much to do all the time and I am trying hard to catch up while the computer fights me. 

This morning it decided to just spin and spin and spin so I had to turn it off.  Can’t click on the restart button if it is spinning.  When I turned it back on that little line partly filled up but I didn’t think it would ever completely finish.  I wish my computer liked me more. 

Maybe computers don’t like artists that work in the old fashioned way of applying paint to a canvas rather than using a computer for paintings on paper.  Computer art is just not for me even though I see some great examples every day.  I much prefer to apply layers and then get to a final layer that has a unique elevated surface. 

Anyway, tomorrow I hope to get to my new lake painting.  It will be another sunset and only 8″ x 10″ so I won’t be intimidated by the cost of paint.  It is hard to believe there was a time when I painted in such thin layers that the cost of the paint was not an issue at all.  Not anymore! 

The virus stats in our area are increasing by quite a bit every day and there are more hospital stays and deaths. 

Please wear a mask.  If you think they are not necessary, just humor the rest of us!  It is the nice thing to do. Be nice!!

I tried on a pair of pants that were too tight.  I don’t believe it. I am declaring widespread fraud.

Sometimes a painting really comes together and it doesn’t even have to age! That is what happened this time and I am extremely pleased with my latest Blue Ridge sunset painting.  It came together after a number of detours and frustration. 

I didn’t quit because it was a good as it was going to get.  I quit because it was exactly what I wanted and that is always a red letter day!  I am pleased to present it here and I have started on another sunset painting. I am really into those gorgeous evening colors right now. 

I may do a still life soon but it is such a lot of work getting the composition and the lighting right.  Although painting is a lot of work, it is what I love to do but I am a little lazy about difficult set ups.  Oh well.  I will get to one soon.  Be sure to check out this week’s Demo Youtube above of St. Louis Missouri. Clyde and I have been a little uptight the last week or so.  He has said a few very funny things but I don’t think I should print them.  Anyway, we both loved something we saw on Facebook.  Someone asked God for a sign if the person was eating too much.  The picture of a cloud that looked just like a pig was floating by! Such a beautiful day!  I hope to get my work done and get outside.  I am indoors so much of the time. 

I am preparing for another painting and it will be a small one so I won’t be so intimidated by the cost of the paint.  Sometimes I practically use a whole tube of $22 white oil paint on one large painting.  That is just one of the tubes.  I use a lot of cadmium red light, too.  It costs $60 a tube. 

Of course, all this is taken into account when a price is established. The main cost of one of my paintings is determined by my time and expertise after working and developing my art since I was twelve. Decades of practice and still learning all the time.  Any artists that are reading this know exactly what I am talking about.

I finished my latest Blue Ridge painting and will have it here soon.  My paintings are becoming more and more complex and the amount of paint is intimidating.  I use excellent paint so my work will last but the price tag sure is high.  The one I just completed is 24″ x 18″ and the one before that is 40″ x 30″. 

I am thinking about a small one next so I won’t hold back if I think one more thick layer is required.  Sometimes I quit because I know the next layer will have problems, too, and other times I am concerned about the cost of the paint.  Well, I know that won’t be an issue for an 10″ x 8″ so that is probably what I will do. 

Be sure to check out my latest Youtube above!  I wanted to paint a Suggestions painting but didn’t think any forms had shown up at the end of the video.  When it had completely dried there was part of a profile in the center, a woman as seen from the back to the right and a ghost like form to the left.  I added a little paint to bring out the profile and woman and added the face to the ghost. 

I had not intended on a Halloween painting, but that is what came out!
