Well,  my latest painting took a nose dive off a Blue Ridge cliff.  After all I wrote about how well it was going it decided to turn into an arm wrestling painting.  Oh well.  This happens and when it does I always repeat the following.  

Paintings will drive you crazy if you let them.  Don’t let them drive you crazy.  I never do. At least I think I am sane.

I have been to this point before and scrap the approach I was using, try something else and usually it turns out great and I have no idea how I got to the end. 

I know that sounds strange but it is not strange to another painter.  They know what I am talking about unless they have a formula they follow with every painting which would be so boring to me that I would quit painting.  I have known a few painters that do that, but not many. 

Most painters sort of know what they are doing but not really and every painting is a learning experience. 

I will get in there tomorrow and fight the colorful fight.  Cheers!

Now that Clyde and I share the dishes 50-50 I like to tease him sometimes.  Yesterday the kitchen looked so good after he finished that I asked him if he had help. 

Oh yeah.  Some guy came in here and did them for me.

Did he leave a bill? 

No, he just did the dishes and walked out.

I wish he would do that for me.  I am going to have to include this in my blog. 

Argh!!  I am going to just stop talking. 

Now you know you will never do that.  You told me once the name Clyde means heard from afar and you are right here with all your pearls of wisdom.

And again, arghhhh!!!!

Sometimes a painting experience is over the top! My latest Blue Ridge painting looked so good in the second stage that I was worried I would lose the strong effect in the next phase.  Was I ever wrong!  I am achieving the most complex painting that I have ever done and I will be shoving any impediment to work to get to it tomorrow.

I don’t think extreme attention to detail necessarily makes for a successful painting.  There will always be so much more to painting than trying to represent what I see that can’t really be represented due to the constant change of light and shade throughout the day. That is why I work from a photograph that I took of a specific moment that I want to embellish.

I put myself into the work with decisions about color and texture that are sometimes in the photograph and sometimes my reaction to the paint as it is applied to the surface. 

Anyway, back to detail.  I do like to get as much detail as possible in these atmospheric landscapes because of the beautiful colors that occur as I work on tricky areas.  It is not really about the detail. It is about the color and I am getting more color than ever before!

I doubt that everyone remembers the Pet Rock Craze from the seventies.  The guy that came up with this crazy pet idea walked away with 15 million for it.  The rocks came in boxes with air holes.  Anyway, it was quite an amazing marketing trend that didn’t last long.

Well the other day I was going back to work on all my computer chores and Clyde said have fun. 

I jokingly said I have a lot of fun working on the computer but I’m not sure the computer is happy about it. 

I have seen pet rocks have more fun than computers. 

I’m sure if a computer could talk it would agree!

I had a lot of success with my new painting of a Wintergreen sunset yesterday and decided I should put it in my Stages of my Artwork collection.  I am intending to completely cover it with another layer that will look very much like it does now but with even more complicated systems of color and texture. 

I have learned so much about the technique that is the best approach for my expressions but I keep changing with every painting and there is something quite different about the color interaction in the mountains this time.  I have always found that constant flucuation of warm and cool colors in the Blue Ridge ranges to be especially difficult so I am very excited that it is working out better than ever this time and I don’t want to lose what I have right now so the file will be preserved.

Now that Clyde has retired from Tech he is great about helping me with the housework.  He is also trying to straighten up his mountains of research in our computer room that actually has a bed for a guest but can’t be used without an overhaul of all the stuff that is on it and under it.  Oh well, he keeps at it. 

Anyway, we share the dishes. We take turns doing the lunch and supper detail.  On Sunday we eat out.  Last Sunday I decided to do the lunch dishes which includes dishes from breakfast and snacks.  We are probably the biggest snackers on the planet. 

I told him I would do the lunch dishes and he would do the supper dishes and, as God is my witness, there will be supper dishes.  It doesn’t matter whether or not we cook, they still breed like rabbits.

Well, as usual I am wondering what happened to Monday.  Someone shot another day out of a cannon.  I was very glad to get back to work on my latest Blue Ridge Parkway painting and it is still coming along.  I had an art wrestling time with it last week but I think I am over that and looking forward to what will probably be the last layer. 

I can see why experts like to x-ray paintings.  All my layers are intricate systems of brushwork and come completely together at the end.  I didn’t take photos of different stages this time.  I like to do that but it slipped my mind.  So far, I don’t think I am losing very successful parts. 

It has not been one of those paintings that are a terrific struggle.  This one has been like a nice  ride down the river with just a  few bumps.  The tough ones keep me on my toes but it is nice to have one that does not fight with me that much.  Be sure to check out my Monday video above!

I love comedy!  The other day I was watching a great stand up comedian on a show I don’t usually watch and he was cracking me up. 

The last thing he said was he saw a woman with pants that had the word yoga on them.  His comment was the pants may say yoga but the woman in them  says McDonalds. 

I mentioned that to Clyde and said I had seen a lot of girls in yoga pants that say McDonalds but I don’t think I am one of them. 

I agree. 

You are a smart husband that wants to stay alive.

I am finally to my blog after a lot of work!  I am so glad to sell another original painting to a great Virginia patron!  Secluded Home which is pictured below is a personal favorite and I am glad it will have a good home.  This one has such a nice atmosphere and intense brushwork. As always wall art prints and prints on just about anything are available by clicking the link below the painting!

Now I have to build a crate which is always a lot more work then you think it would be.  Shipping artwork is tricky.  The painting has to be double boxed and immobilized. I have to cut out the cardboard for the two boxes and put them together.  I have so many different sizes of paintings that I can’t order boxes. They don’t make the kind of box I need.  It is so easy to damage artwork and I take every precaution to prevent that from happening. 

Since I am so busy right now I have decided to upload a short video on Monday about this sale and show some other works in my studio instead of a Painting Demo.  Those videos take quite a lot of time even though they are not very long.  I do a lot of prep regarding what I will paint and how it will be presented as I try to have a pleasant conversation at the same time.

I know I have mentioned before that I don’t like all this computerization of our lives but it is great that  I can reach patrons on the internet.

Still, like I said before if they ever computerize the bathroom I will need an out house.

Clyde did that one better. He said if bathrooms are computerized he is afraid someone will hack his toilet.  It might even leave without him.

Tiring Monday but I am sure I am not the only one saying that.  The phone is ringing all day long with scammers ready for another week of bugging me.  I do not answer my phone unless I know who is calling.  Those robo calls are really working my phone.  I don’t want to just have a cell phone for a number of reasons but that land line sure is a pain! 

I am so pleased to finally getting some work done on another Blue Ridge painting!  It is coming along and I think if I had to say which sort of painting I like to do best it would be The Blue Ridge and surrounding ridges in oil paint.  This one is an intense sunset at Wintergreen.  The patterns of light and shade on the ridges and a few houses is startling and I will be pleased to get into the studio each day to work on it. 

I would rather work with a combination of my daylight flourescent lights and some natural sunlight coming through the window but the weatherman is calling for rain for a while.  Oh well,  I can’t wait for the light I like to get to work and all my paintings are done in a series of layers so maybe the next layer will be to better lighting.

It certainly has been cloudy lately.  I don’t mind overcast weather but I would like to see the sun soon.  It always amazes me that when I have a patron coming over for a studio visit it is almost always cloudy.  We have an active solar house and it is a dark house on one side and bright on the other. 

A lot of my artwork is on display in the dark side of the house, not just the studio.   I turn on a lot of lights but the natural light coming in through the windows looks the best.

Anyway, I have finally started my Wintergreen sunset painting!  It is great to back to oil paint but I think I will be ordering some very expensive colors soon.  It would be great if professional oil paint was the same price as house paint.  I knew an artist that painted very large works and he would use house paint.  I can understand that!  The colors are way too flat for me and I want my work to last forever so I use Gamblin and Utrect. 

I mostly use the more expensive brand which is Gamblin but I don’t like Gamblin Cerulean Blue so I order that color from Utrecht.  I also don’t use earth colors which are less expensive.  I have a colorist palette so I order expensive blues, greens, yellows, reds, and purples.  I can get any kind of earth color from those colors and I think the effect is more vibrant.  Right now, Cadmium Red is $66 for a large tube.  I always buy large tubes. The small ones don’t last long at all.

Clyde and I are having more trouble finding things than usual.  I usually get very aggravated and start cussing like a sailor.  Clyde just keeps trying to find whatever it is we can’t locate. 

Anyway I told Clyde the first nine chapters of The Marriage book are “Where is it?” 

Chapter 10 is “I don’t know”.

I am pleased that I managed another Skyline Beauty painting of Austin Texas!  Now I will have five for an Etsy listing.  This time I decided to use soft pastel colors.  I am getting a lot of compliments on my expressive skylines so I thought it would be a nice change of pace to use a different palette.  I am very pleased with the results. 

My first medium was soft pastels and I know how to mimic that look with paint. Be sure to check it out! 

I am looking forward to the patron that commissioned me to restore some glass paintings.  He is also considering a lake commission and will be purchasing The Lodge at The Peaks of Otter.  He has a print but he wants to get the original and give the print to a friend.

Life with the Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Well, I got my new phone.  I stared at that box for a few days and then was notified I should set it up.  I can’t believe how much trouble I have with this sort of thing.  The last time the operator had to admit something was actually wrong with the phone and we had to send it back and get another one. 

I told Clyde if you hear me crying it is because I finally opened the box.  He said if I hear you laughing I will know you chucked it out the window.  As it turned out we spent an hour and a half trying to get it set up with an operator. 

After forty five minutes he assured me the minutes had been transferred to my new phone.  I tried to make a call and was informed by the phone there would be charges.  So we started over with another operator, this time on a chat.  Finally I can use the phone. 

Now I just need help getting all the stuff from my old phone transferred to the new one.  We will call a friend that is much younger than us to help.  He is not from India.  We can easily understand him.  Yikes!
