I don’t have much to say about anything going on in the world.  I am encouraged by some events and discouraged by others.  I guess Dickens first line in Tale of Two Cities will always apply to this planet.  It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the epic of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way– in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only. 

I am, like many, a big Dickens fan and I have been fascinated by the sources for his novels.  They are mostly about specific events in his life.  Every one knows that David Copperfield is based on much of his life but I’ll bet not many people know that the character Estella from Great Expectations had her origin in the young actress Dickens left his wife for.  The character Tiny Tim was based on one of his girls that died when she was very young.  His father spent time in a Debtor’s prison like the father of the main character in Little Dorrit.  There are many more examples.  He wisely drew from his own life and created some of the most memorable and fascinating characters in literature.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

When I was young there were two things young guys did not do to their hair.  They did not shave their head when they experienced hair loss and they did not dye their hair a different color.  Yes, they let it grow which really shook up the previous generation but that was it. 

Times have certainly changed.  Now most guys have short hair but there are plenty that don’t and they have no problem with changing the color.  The famous violinist David Garrett is really a brunette but he dyes his hair blonde. 

I don’t have any problem with hair dye or long hair but I really have a problem with shaved heads.  I don’t know why but I prefer to see some hair. Anyway, Clyde still has plenty of hair and I told him that I would hate it if he shaved his head if he started to go bald. 

He pulled his beard.  Does it look like I am going to use a razor any time soon? 

I don’t think I will be seeing a shiny Clyde chrome dome in the future.

I was just looking at the oscar awards for this year and I have heard many people say they are pleased with the results. I used to keep up with the oscars since I am such a movie buff but I don’t follow them now that there is no end to the type of movies I can get on Netflix and at the library. 

I have found so many great independent films and foreign films that I have bought a number of them.  I have quite a collection and keep adding to it.  I love all kinds of movies and admire all the people that take part in producing them. 

I will definitely check out the winners when I get more time, especially At Eternity’s Gate starring Willem Defoe.  I am a big fan of his and there are two lesser known films that he starred in that I want to order.  Victory and The Reckoning.  Sam Neil also stars in Victory and I think it was one of, if not, his most powerful performances.

I even have a fantastic restored version of The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari which is one of the first horror films.  By today’s standards it is not that frightening but it is one of my all time favorite movies.  When it was first shown in Germany people were screaming in their seats.  How times change!  

I could go on and on. I still agree with those that think Citizen Kane is the greatest film ever made.  I think the main reason I am so impressed with it is the cinematography.  Orson Welles was a painter and the compositions in Citizen Kane are fantastic! 

Anyway, back to my work.  I was going to start another wildflower painting but I am thinking of painting a home flower garden.  I love the way some people arrange their flowers.

My phone is always beeping and booping at me.  It makes a type of bell sound every time Facebook adds something. When someone wants to contact me directly I get a sound that makes me think of the game of ping pong. 

Anyway, the other day it started sounding off and I told Clyde I had to talk to my phone too much of the time.  He said he wished it would sprout wings and go fly off a cliff. 

Gee, do you think Clyde hates cell phones?

I was so sorry to hear of the death of Peter Tork. I was not a big fan but I admire anyone that can be successful in the music field.  The show was just a two year hit but it was fun and after a struggle he was able to obtain work when it was taken off the air.  Music has always been an important part of my life and I play my piano every day and hope my fingers can keep going.  So far no arthritis.  My grandmother and great uncle attended Peabody Conservatory which is difficult to get into and they both taught music. 

My niece is married to the celebrated composer, Atli Orvarsson, who makes an excellent living composing music for movies.  The most prominent one that comes to mind is Pirates of the Caribbean. 

The music world has changed quite a bit.  There was a time not too long ago that accomplished musicians that played with rock and roll bands were not accepted by orchestras.  Now there are cross over musicians like David Garrett that play classical and popular music.  I like all music and own a lot of music CDs. 

My latest wildflower painting is just about done.  I have two stages of it on my website and after some tweaking I will post the final version.  I think I may switch to some abstract acrylic paintings for a while.  Oils is my main medium but it is such an intense experience I like to work with mediums that I just use water with.  Time to switch on that exhaust fan!  The studio is full of the smell of mineral spirits.

Clyde always keeps me posted on the weather.  He has been studying weather patterns since he was a little guy.  His mom said he was usually right about his predictions.  I am, of course, hearing a lot about all the rain we have been having. Today he said there is so much rain the ducks are lining up to get on boats.

As always this blog is about my artwork and, yes, one of the purposes is to sell it.  My artwork is extremely important to me and in order to make it I have to sell it.  As I have said may times I can’t take them with me and I want them to exist after I am gone.  Having said that I have decided to continue to talk about my work AND to start paying more attention to what is going on around me.  I tend to hide in my own world. 

I am going to start giving my opinions about other things that are happening starting with this Jussie Smollet news item.  Either way this is an awful event.  If the actor was attacked by people that want to equate racism and homophobia with Make America Great Again then I am appalled that there are people that think that way.  If the actor made up this attack I am appalled that he would do that to get attention for himself or to bring more emphasis to a terrible trend among some citizens of this country. 

I can only hope people that equate the slogan Make America Great Again with hate will come to their senses. 

There.  Opinion stated and now I have to get back to a lot of art promotion on the internet.  My latest wildflower painting is in the third stage and coming along without intense aggravation.  I keep wondering when it will start acting up but I think this one is smooth sailing.  Yes!!!

Last night I was watching a commercial that asked people why they didn’t take something to improve their brain since they take medications to improve their body.

I asked Clyde that question and he said taking a medication to improve his brain would by like spitting water melon seeds at a tyrannosaurus rex and expecting it to stop charging.

I think we will continue to be as drug free as possible.

I am still waiting for the arm wrestling on my latest painting.  I am amazed at how cooperative it has been so far.  I think there is a demon hiding behind my storage bin that is just waiting to come out and pounce.  I hope not.  Nothing wrong with a painting that comes along quietly without my pulling out a gun and putting it out of its misery. 

I have been at this far too long to get that mad at a painting.  I wish I had some of the ones I thought were losers when I was too hard on myself. 

Glad I got over that nonsense.  I have won many awards from prominent people and I now agree with them.  I think my work will last!

Last night Clyde was watching How to Train a Dragon.  Such an unusual movie!  The one that looked like a cat was especially strange. 

I asked Clyde what could I do to train him? 

Throw me out the front door and lock it? 

How would that tame you? 

I don’t know.  I guess you will have to try it and see. 

Too cold out there and I don’t think it would do much good anyway.  LOL!

Still happy with my latest wildflower painting.  I have finished the second stage and will add it to my website on Fine Art America where prints can be purchased.  I have been posting my stages for a while now and prints have been bought of different layers of a painting that no longer exist.  This is a great way to preserve the journey through a painting. 

The first stage is usually the easiest.  The arm wrestling tends to happen in  later layers. I work until I am pleased with each stage.  I just know it needs more.   This one is coming along without much aggravation so far.  I think I will paint one more wildflower painting and then move on to something else.

We have had quite a few things go wrong in the last two years.  The biggest one was the new roof.  I think we are experiencing the Fall of the House of Kessler.  Just joking.  Now, my coffee pot has blitzed out.  The water won’t go through the pipe thingy.  Anyway,  it was a cheap one so I am thinking of getting a better model. 

Clyde says the more expensive ones have gotten too complicated. 

I don’t want one that has to contact China to find out where the cup is. 

Ha ha.  I think we will manage.

Still complaining about computers.  I keep trying to work on my Wix site and weird things happen that are not supposed to happen.  I wonder if it is a cache problem.  Every time I mention to Clyde we need to clean out the cache I get some sort of run around about how that would mess other things up.  I would handle these problems myself but I think it wise to listen to someone that is on a computer eight hours every day.  I am sure he knows more than I do about this machine that helps and irks me every day.  I don’t get as mad at it as I used to.  All these road blocks just seem to be part of the experience now and I am tired of throwing tamtrums so I will keep on trying.  I know there is a friendly button somewhere that I am missing.  I will keep on looking.

I am getting real tired of these commercials with people that claim they have a car but don’t use it because they can’t afford insurance.  I don’t believe that one for a minute.  I’m sure there are plenty of people driving without insurance.  The courts are full of them.  I mentioned that to Clyde when one came on carrying a large bag next to her children.

Sure, she doesn’t drive.  She has a gun in that bag.  Give me a ride or else! 

I think my scenario of driving without insurance is more likely.

I am having a great time with my latest wildflower painting and hope to get the second layer done soon.  More and more I am letting the paint take shape with a strong impasto effect that seems to melt beautifully into the canvas.  I have seen a number of how to paint youtubes that are speeded up so the viewer does not have to watch for a such a long time.  It is fun to see the work look like it is magically appearing. 

I may do one of those myself.  I tried a while back but had trouble with the software which is never a surprise. As usual, I am not figuring out the instructions on a computer.   I now have two blank pages on my Wix site that I did not mean to add.  According to the site, one of my pages needed to be modified.  When I did a blank page appeared. 

Computers, computers, computers.  I keep plugging along while they trip me up at every opportunity.  Time to paint.  I don’t need a computer for that.

I received some bad news a few days ago.  A great friend, teacher, and excellent artist found out she had cancer throughout her body and just had a few days to live. She and her wonderful husband had recently moved to Williamsburg to be near her son and were awaiting the birth of their first grand child.  Her daughter-in-law was due so a decision was made to induce labor so she could see the baby before she passed.  She was able to see the baby and say, “I’m a grandmother!”.  She passed yesterday evening and we will all miss her.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

Nothing funny today.  Clyde and I are both saddened by the loss of Jeannie Albertson Fender.  We have been talking about her life and her husband Richard and the trip to Paris I took with her and two other friends a while back.   When we returned we took a short trip to my parent’s house in McLean, VA and had a nice time.  It is sad to think that out of that group that chatted and had refreshments, only two of us are left. 

My Dad came home early from the office to see us.  He already knew Patty but he had never met Jeannie.  He was such an outgoing gregarious guy that he gave them both a kiss on their cheeks.  Jeannie was so pleased she said, “I want another one!”.  Dad give her another one and then we had a great talk about Paris.  I went on a number of other trips and outings with Jeannie.  I am so sorry she is gone.

I am very excited about my new wildflower painting!  I love to work with all the textures and colors in field of beautiful flowers!  This one has white and magenta flowers and I am looking forward to the next stage.  I am pleased with the last one and will do a few more before I move on to something else.  I may do some expressive still lifes.  I do not know the meaning of the phrase artist’s block.  I just know there are never enough hours in the day for all that I want to do and I had better get some housework done before I start choking on the dust.
