I am real pleased with my current still life and hope to finish it soon.  My newest Blue Ridge Parkway painting is also well under way.  Here are two favorite still lifes!  Mary Beth’s Gift won second place in an International Show in Nogales Arizona!

Mary Beth’s Gift is one of my favorite still lifes. I am especially pleased with the use of line and intense color contrast in this work. I have always believed that it is not what you do in art but how you do it. This plant was given to me by an office mate and I liked it so much that I decided to make it into a work of art. I found the perfect doily that adds to the strong linear accents and contrasts nicely with the complementary colors.

This pastel painting won second place in the Pastel Division at an International Juried Competition in Nogales, Arizona.

Old Plant is a vibrant painting of one of our planters by an open window. I am especially pleased with the strong patterns and value contrast in this work. I haven’t met the medium I don’t like and oil pastels are high on the list of favorites. My main medium is oil paint but I am also love pastels and have won awards in both from prominent artists.

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

It has been a while since I posted about the Blue Ridge Discovery Center that Clyde works with so here is some interesting news.   The hikes will start up again in the warm weather!

BioSurvey: Matthews State Forest

In support of and compliance with the Virginia State Forest’s objective to demonstrate and educate, Blue Ridge Discovery Center is proposing a multi-year biological survey of Matthews State Forest. Through this project, BRDC will also bring attention to wildlife habitat and water quality while providing relevant data for future land use planning.

To reinforce the educational component, BRDC will enlist science and art teachers based in the Galax, Grayson and Carroll counties region. Through these teachers, we will create groups of students to conduct the field studies under the direction of BRDC staff and volunteers from local universities and colleges.

  1. Dear Kendall – i am looking at your work and blog for the first time and resonate very much with your art. As a composer, I would love to do a music video with images of your paintings and an original piece inspired by your work. But only if that would be something you would be okay with. ~ Paul

    • Hi mrpaul. Thank you for the great compliment on my work! I am glad you are inspired by it. I need more information before I can give you a decision. Do you intend to make money with this video? If so, I am sure you are aware that artists are entitled to a percentage of the profits when their artwork is used to promote something. Let me know and have a great day! Kendall

      • no profit involved – i’ve always made my music available for free (which is not something i can control very much given the different standards currently existing between art and music where the public will pay for a painting to hang on their wall but expects to pay either nothing, or almost next to nothing, for the sounds they listen to)

      • I know what you are talking about. I play the piano and my church pays me when I fill in. Our organist gets a decent salary. My view on that is if someone wants a musician to play for free, then that person should do it. He or she can pay for the lessons, practice every day and then play for free. Anyway, since your video is on Youtube there is a possibility it could make money so if you put in writing that if that happens I will receive 10 % of the profits, I will agree. Also, the copyright notice should be on the artwork. I had hundreds of prints downloaded for free on a site that stole one of my images so now I put the copyright notice right in the middle. I hope I haven’t put you off the project but I will understand if you change your mind. Thanks again for the great compliment and I hope you have a relaxing evening!

      • hi again kendall…perhaps i should have clarified before, i’m not a musician, only a lowly composer – musicians can actually do quite well financially (at least with some decent side income), while most composers who try to make a living composing are living at poverty level – c’est la vie – also, there’s no way i will make money from youtube as i steadfastly refuse to agree to post videos with their advertisements – sorry to hear about your experience with the stolen image – i appreciate the need for the copyright notice – anyway, as there is no profit involved i will let this idea go – thanks for your time and patience

      • Lowly composer? I am extremely impressed with composers. I have no idea how to compose music. I think you may have misunderstood me which is so easy in internet messages. If there is no money involved then I have no problem with you using my artwork for a video if you still want to. As long as a copyright notice is on the artwork that would be fine. Have a great day!

      • thanks, kendall – my apologies for being in a bit of a lamenting mood in my last message – ‘lowly’ is a word i feel describes the composer’s general lot in our culture, as the well compensated composers are not getting paid for their art unless it serves as a background to a tv show, commercial, video game or movie – such a strange situation to my soul – awhile back, i remember listening to an interview with a composer who had done quite well for himself – he was explaining how he had made enough money over the years to finally set aside some time and money to compose something that he wanted to write just from his own inner self expression – i remember being floored by that and thought how sad it was that he could not express himself in his music for so long in order to be successful at it – that’s ‘lowly’ to me – oh well, i’ll shake off this melancholy and see what i can come up with thanks to your beautiful artwork
