I can’t believe that I am not having a lot of problems with my current Blue Ridge Parkway painting. It has been coming along nicely from the first layer! I wish they were all like that but I would probably change my mind.
The battle is just part of the process and I think I would lose interest if they were all like this one. Still, it is nice to not be arm wrestling with it.
Not done, so maybe the struggle will be in the last layer.

Hanging Beauty is an intense oil pastel painting of flowers on our veranda. The strong light effect creates a beautiful atmosphere and great warm/cool color contrast. My husband, Clyde Kessler, is a well-known naturalist in the New River Valley and in addition to his bird and butterfly knowledge, he is also very knowledgeable about flowers and good at growing them. He has the green thumb in the family. Mine is usually covered in oil paint.

Rose Start is a glowing oil pastel of our rose bush when it was first starting out. We have a small white fence around it to protect it. I have always been fascinated with the look of white objects in the evening. They seem to glow from with-in and I captured that look in this work. Carnival Evening by Henri Rousseau is a great example of this effect. I especially enjoy looking at that painting for the use of the white that creates a magical effect.

Like any married couple we have learned a lot about our different backgrounds over the years. One thing my mother did that Clyde’s mother did not do was repeat helpful sayings. I heard these so many times that they got to be quite irritating and the most irritating thing was I was too stubborn to apply them to my life. The one I hate the most to this day is Penny wise and Pound foolish. I am amazed at the number of times I have chosen the cheap route that ended up costing me more later. I actually make Clyde come with me to the store to help me buy certain items so I won’t get stuck with the cheap one that caught my eye. He always gets the better item, usually the medium priced one.
Anyway I like to change some of those sayings and the other night when I was fooling with laundry late in the evening I said to Clyde, “Women’s work is never done and it ain’t no fun.” I think that is an improvement on that one.

I think I have mentioned before that I am some what of a freak of nature, a girl that does not like to shop. My husband hates to shop and our son isn’t into it either so that is why we are still at home. It takes a lot more than bargains to get us out of here. Cascading Day Lilies is an intimate look at some Day Lilies my husband planted in our yard. He certainly has a green thumb. All of his flowers look great! I especially like the red/green contrast in this work. Years ago at a competition May Stevens exclaimed when she met me, Oh the red/green painter! I do especially like those two complementary colors. Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler
A while back I wrote about a mouse that had settled into our kitchen. My husband bought a trap that was designed to catch the mouse and then re-locate it. The mouse was caught and my husband took it down to the river. He said the mouse looked at him with the saddest eyes. It was, of course, perfectly happy living in a cozy home and snacking on our food.
A few days ago when I opened one of the shelf doors a horrible smell came out. I have been cleaning out the space and haven’t found a thing that would cause such a horrible smell. I told my husband that maybe a relative of the first mouse that knew about the trap avoided it and died a natural death behind the shelves where we can’t get it. Revenge is sweet!

For umpteen years we have gone to my husband’s home for Thanksgiving, but for some reason my mother-in-law wants us to celebrate on Sunday this year. Well, that was not good enough for my son so we are having two Thanksgiving dinners .
I hardly ever roast meat in the oven that takes a long time. I taught for many years and just didn’t have the time for that. My husband and I were concerned that a meat thermometer would be harmed if it were in the oven too long. Shows how much we know. I looked it up. No problem.

I really didn’t think the snow threat was true. Lots of times snow is predicted here and we hardly get any. Not this time! The inches are piling up and I still have not bought new boots. My old ones cracked apart. I guess I’ll get the dog sled ready and head to the store.

I was trying to remember a famous saying about how to be happy in life. The saying consists of three requirements for contentment. I couldn’t remember the third one and it was bugging me so I asked my husband and he didn’t know what I was talking about.
In order to be happy one must have someone to love, something to do, and….
Suddenly I remembered. The third one is spaghetti! Something to look forward to. I look forward to spaghetti every Monday night. It is a family tradition!
