I have been trying all day to get a blog done but this day has shot by so fast I am looking at all the things I needed to do in the rear view mirror! 

My husband had a weird suggestion.  He noticed I still have my mallet and chisel from a sculpture class I took a long time ago.  Maybe I can pound or carve it into a better day that doesn’t fly by? 

Like I said.  Weird suggestion, but what else would you expect  from The Word and Bird Man?

The Mushroom Picker is a languid view of a mushroom picker at Pandapas Pond in Giles County. This is one of many sites that my husband, Clyde, researches for birds and butterflies. On one of his excursions he came upon this man and took a slide of him which I used for the painting. The light in this scene was intense and flickering though out the bank.

It looked like it was dancing around the figure.

My Turn is a delightful pastel painting of a toddler watering flowers. I love to watch children.  They are in a world all their own.  It is no wonder they like to believe in fairies!  The flower garden is on the edge of a woods and the cool foliage colors beautifully accent the warm colors in the girl’s hair and clothing. I live to paint but I also work in pastels and other mediums.

I am very proud of my American Artist Award from famed pastelist Daniel Greene.

Sometimes I like to paint people that I don’t know in an intensely expressive manner.  The vendor here is bathed in coloristic light and strong cool shadows.

Vendor is an expressive, colorful look at a street vendor in a parking lot. The color contrast makes this painting an especially eye-catching work. My work is unique to me but it harkens back to both Impressionism and Expressionism. This painting is one of my more Expressionistic works like the work of Edvard Munch, one of my favorite painters.

Intensity is my most expressive portrait. The color contrast and strong brushwork make this an exciting visual experience. I love to push warm/cool color relations and get them to sing. This painting is a great example of that concept. The man is lost in thought but not oblivious of his surroundings. The shadows add to the expression and emphasize the value patterns that connect the space.

 

Life with The Word and Bird Man – Clyde Kessler

 

A few days ago a bear was spotted in downtown Radford!  This certainly doesn’t happen very often but the incident inspired my husband to come up with his own report!  Leave it to my husband to turn a scary event into something funny!

 

Early this evening a bear was sighted running a red light in downtown Radford. 

It is supposed that it was late for a fraternity pledge or a movie.  No police officer  bothered to stop it for a ticket.

I need some light.  Of course I have good light in the studio but I am not happy working when there isn’t any natural light coming in.  Even with my daylight florescent lights the warm colors are very hard to see when it is dark outside. 

 

More than anything, my artwork is about the color!

So glad I picked today to swim!  Usually I have to dodge kids that get in the lane marked off for lap swimmers.  Today I was the only one in the pool!  That was a nice break!  I love to watch the kids but they don’t get the lane thing.

I have two sisters and they have let me make portraits of them which is something artists often do.  Models are expensive and it is a great experience to paint family members.  This first one is of Nan when she was ten with the only dog she had growing up.  My mother decided I needed a dog and we got this adorable poodle that we all loved.  We liked to let the hair grow out rather then trim it. 

Beau was a very sweet dog and Nan was devoted to him.

Nan was quite athletic and became a Ice Skating instructor.  I love to tell people that since it certainly isn’t a run of the mill occupation.  She excels at skating and teaching the sport.

I am glad I was able to paint her as a child and adult.  She is an interesting subject and I am especially pleased with the expressive look in her eyes in this portrait.

 

My new painting is coming along but I think it is going into the arm wrestling stage.  I guess if they didn’t start out well I would never pick up a brush. 

I love to paint but it is always a battle!

The Ballet was Great!

The ballet was great!  How wonderful to be able to see a live transmission from Russia!  Legends of Love was beautiful and I enjoyed the interviews during the intermissions.  One of the principal dancers said he wanted to dance this ballet since he was a child!  Ambition fulfilled!

An article on me and my artwork will be in the June print issue of The Inflectionist and the CEO contacted me about which paintings to use.  I have 699 pieces of artwork in my portfolio right now so I am going to have a hard time deciding which work to use.

 

He has some in mind but I’m not sure they are the best choices to represent me.  Decisions, decisions!  I am sure we will work it out!

 

The Inflectionist is a magazine for a small group of writers and artists. 

Most of the writers possess journalism degrees and some of the team are actually well known figures in the music and literary industries, including Kevin Stea (who was in Madonnas “Vogue” and Michael Jacksons “Black or White”) and Adam Jacot De Boinod (a writer for the TV show “QI”).

 

Glad to be asked to be part of this magazine.  Now to figure out what to put in the article.
